Non-BB IB → Series B AI Strategic Finance → VC: How to Position Myself?

Title: Non-BB IB → Series B AI Strategic Finance → VC: How to Position Myself?

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some advice on positioning myself for a future move into VC.

I have 3–4 years of investment banking experience at a non-BB bank, covering a non-TMT sector. I recently received a mid-level strategic finance offer at a high-growth Series B AI company.

My long-term goal has always been VC. In testing the recruiting market, I’ve received feedback that my non-TMT coverage and bank’s brand are obstacles. I see an operating role as an opportunity to gain firsthand experience helping scale a tech business and build a more differentiated profile.

Part of my thinking comes from looking at the backgrounds of MDs and GPs at top-tier VC firms: many of the profiles I’ve studied include operating experience before investing. I recognize that operating experience alone doesn’t necessarily make someone a great investor, but I hope it would help me develop stronger commercial judgment and offer founders practical support. Ideally, I’d differentiate myself from other bankers and build a skill set beyond sourcing deals, particularly before reaching a role with investment decision-making responsibility.

For those who have made a similar move or work in VC:

  • What should I prioritize in this role to become a compelling candidate for a top-tier VC firm?
  • Which responsibilities or projects would be most valuable — fundraising, pricing, GTM strategy, corporate development, or something else?
  • How should I build investor relationships and demonstrate investment judgment while in an operating role?

I’d appreciate candid views on whether this role is a sensible stepping stone, how much it could help overcome my recruiting hurdles, and what gaps I would still need to address. Both near-term actions and longer-term career advice would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.
