TPG Capital vs. KKR

Not sure if people saw the other forum but apparently KKR went 0 for 4 with Harvard B-school applications while TPG went 7 for 10. Considering how extremely similar the applicants backgrounds are do people have any thoughts on their differences that can shed a light on the reasoning behind decisions etc.?

The numbers here are so small that we can't really draw any meaningful conclusion. I seriously doubt there is any substantial difference between KKR and TPG applicants.

Admissions procedures for top MBA's are tough enough that speculation is almost futile. It's like wondering why in high school one guy got into Harvard while 9 others with comparable stats were rejected.

Besides, I am sure those poor lost KKR employees will find a home at Stanford (or, god forbid, Wharton).

Coincidence and not correlation. Work experience is just one of many criteria. eg if the kkr guys wrote sh!t essays then no surprise they would get rejected.

Agree with the above. Bschool has nothing to do with the name in your resume; KKR, TPG, GS, MS, it's all the same. It is all about what you have done, both professionally and personally that get you into a school.

In this situation the TPG guys were probably more well rounded with better extra curricular and better essays. Maybe the KKR kids didn't put in the effort because they thought they were a shoe in, who knows the reasons.

The only thing that is a fact is that none of them got in because they worked at TPG just as none of them didn't get in because they worked at KKR.

How exactly are you supposed to differentiate yourself in your application? When you speak of extra curriculars, do you mean extra curricular activities outside of work (or their extra curriculars during college)? How important are the essays and the interview?
