UNSW (Sydney)to Hong Kong IBD?

Chances of getting into IBD in HK?

Grew up in HK, HKID, all that, but Australian and Canadian recruiting seem to be non-existent for Hong Kong investment banks.

I'm doing a LLB/Accounting double degree. I'm considering applying for more middle office/back office roles in HK. Thoughts?

I know people who interviewed for IB in HK from Australia - sometimes the banks actually come to Australia to interview candidates. I applied for and was offered a role in HK in S&T (go to school in Australia) but was ineligible for IBD because I don't speak Mandarin/Cantonese fluently.

It's definitely possible to get IBD in HK (but only if you speak the language fluently - they actually test you) but by far easiest way is to do a SA there first.

Macquarie Capital (MacBank's IBD) would be a reliable way to approach this. But you should aim to do 2-3 years in their Sydney office first. You'll get much better technical training, deal exposure and connections in the Sydney office than in HK.

They love having Sydney-trained ABC's relocate to HK. The Sydney transfers are better quality than local hires.

PM me if you'd like to discuss more. I'm ex-UNSW B.Com (accounting)/LL.B, have a HKID etc.

Woah.

Can't PM you, not enough banana points. Email?

Or do you mind if I just ask you questions here?

PS: What happened to your UCLA time?

Transferred. I wanted to study law in addition to business, and I didn't want to have to run the risk of not getting into a JD program after UCLA. Plus I wanted to give myself a chance of getting into corporate law as well as business/finance/accounting. What do you think of that decision?
