visas to the US for Canadians

I'd like to land an S&T or research gig in NYC next summer and would appreciate insight on how the whole Visa process works, specifically for Canadians (assuming NAFTA makes it a bit easier). As I understand, I'd need an H-1B Visa and they're not too hard to get, but could someone please confirm this? Also, do I apply myself and, if so, how many weeks/months prior to the job?

Overall, is this a really burdensome process for banks or are visas usually not much of an issue as long as you're qualified? I'm kinda worried here..

Thank you; any help is appreciated

if you're an engineer then its easy - TN is the way to go. all you need is an offer of employment letter. not sure about S&T spots though. check nafta for other "professional" classifications -> google bud.

If the company is willing to sponsor you, you can also go on a J-1 training visa (especially if it's just for the summer). Some BBs hire Canadians regularly so it's not much of an issue, but I know of at least one bank that doesn't hire Canadians because of the whole visa process.

Your school/bank might have a system where they help you apply for the visa, but otherwise you'll have to apply on your own. I think you need a letter of employment to get your visa though (1-2 months before the start date is enough time to get your visa).
