Visiting Banks?

I have recently applied to many banks via email and their online systems. I will have spring break in a couple weeks and plan on heading down into the city. Would it hurt me in any way by trying to stop by the offices and seeing if I could talk to anybody about the summer internship positions? I see it as either showing I am showing determination and effort, or I guess it could be taken as me trying too hard. Any suggestions?

Well, you probably won't be able to move past the lobby. Banks (and all corporate buildings) are very secure..you need to swipe your ID card to get through to the elevators (which take you to the floors that all of the business units sit on). If you don't have someone's name whom you're meeting to give to the receptionist in the lobby, or if you have a name but not an appointment then they'll call that person and they will promptly refuse you entry. I really think it's a waste of your time. You likely won't get past the lobby.

If you can set something up ahead of time, it's a good idea. It's not always easy to do that, but it's worth a shot. Not sure if you are at a target school or not, but if so, I would imagine your career services could get you a contact to start the process.

If not, use any connections you might have, such as friends, alumni, etc. If you can find out who the recruiter is that is always helpful. I did something similar to this. We harassed about 12 banks, 4 agreed to see us. So who knows.

As the previous posters said, DO NOT just show up. It will be a complete waste of time.

Your chances are slim if that person is anything less than a senior associate in coperate finance. The chinese wall is also physical. Not only will you need to get past the lobby guards; but you will need an access card to get into the ibankers offices. This is designed to keep traders, research analysts and outsiders like YOU from seeing insider info.

If your going to visit the trading floor, it should be a breeze only if you know someone.

well if I applied to the places online, is it advantageous to call them a week or two later (assuming I do not hear back from them by then) and ask if I could speak with whoever is in charge of the summer internship positions? And then possibly bring up the fact that I will be around town and try to get them to see me personally? After applying over banks online services, I get this feeling that my application just goes into their files and no one even checks anything. I have this big urge to try and talk and show them I am a worthy candidate. Anyone have suggestions?

Call the main line, and ask to be transferred to "the person in charge of the summer internship program". One you have them on the phone, it's up to you to prevent them from hanging up. I'm assuming you're from a non-target, so don't tell them what school you go to in your introduction.
