I don’t really think language has ever been a problem on here. Even though this is the off topic forum, some topics on here can be a bit... too much. Trolling is fun, but there is a limit, other topics are controversial and often are not written well (coming off racist, trying to trigger people, etc) so you get 200 comments and bunch of MS all over the place, it doesn’t lead to useful and healthy discourse. Even with all that, I don’t think topics should be deleted, unless it crosses some line. Now, what that line is or should be, I don’t know. It’s up to the mods. However, I do believe this site should be as open and as free as possible when it comes to discussing controversial topics. By the way, I don’t think censorship is too bad on here, I’ve made some posts that could be controversial and so have many others and they weren’t deleted. Maybe it’s just me, but it doesn’t seem that bad.

There were quite a few times Monaco Monkey crossed the line and got banned. I’d imagine there’s a hard balance between not becoming too controlling but also not becoming 4chan

I’m against all censorship. People should say whatever the fuck they want. I don’t care if it’s rAcISt, HoMopHoBic, trANspHoBiC, whatever label you throw at it. The problem is that the moment you define a certain type of speech that can’t be used, it’s up to the “moderator” to decide what qualifies as that kind of speech. In principle, these rules may sound great (no racism, homophobia, be nice, etc), but in practice, the almighty “moderator” could end up censoring whatever they disagree with. They won’t do this on purpose 9 times out of 10, but they’ll rationalize why a certain comment goes against their rules when in fact, they just strongly disagree with an opinion. And that’s how freedom of speech slowly goes away. This is just on an online forum (and this doesn’t happen much on WSO...for now), so it doesn’t really matter, but it still sucks.

I think instead of this almighty, centralized group of moderators censoring and banning people outright, individual users should be allowed to block certain threads/users so only they don’t have to look at their posts. If you think something is offensive, then fine don’t look at it, but don’t make that decision for the rest of us.

I disagree. I think there are some clear lines to keep up some semblance of quality control for the site. There was a user who justified murdering a family over finances and got banned quickly after that. That doesn’t belong here, even in the off topic forum.

Ok, well I should have clarified that advocating for anything outright illegal shouldn't be allowed. I'm talking more about the stuff that's considered "offensive," meaning what you could say in 2010 that you can't say now.

The recent thread(s) about India got deleted because it crossed the line culturally and it wasn't even meant as a joke or anything. A lot of people have a problem with immigrants at college or work. It is their problem to have and their opinion, coming to WSO or other forums and post negative stereotypes isn't acceptable (to most forums).

Trolling is one thing, at times even acceptable if funny and entertaining, but inciting hatred or conflict on a forum is not a solution.

I generally get censored when I post some batshit insane thing libs say on social media or within education. The libs see themselves as morally superior and unquestionably right, thus can't accept being confronted about their fallacies.

Why include the line “Worse than Hitler?”

Getting some internet post deleted doesn’t compare to having your family tortured and or shot

It was just parroting the average college educated liberal when facing views he doesn't understand and doesn't like, hence shrugs as ''worse than Hitler'' even if it's a minimal issue.

Think of it as a way to stimulate the direction your conversation skills & humor should take if you were to get into the almighty investment banking and private equity world. Would be nice to see more collegial debate (not to say there isnt a lot of it already) and less shitposting. Leave that stuff to reddit

People coming on here to be children kinda defeats the purpose of coming here to grow up and get into finance. I don't have a problem with mods trying to maintain quality before it's too late and the 30+ crowd of professionals with all the useful advice stop checking in.

Let's not pretend this is a media outlet and your voice is being stifled. We're all (mostly) anonymous here.

WSO is pretty lenient when it comes to letting people speak their minds regardless of topic.  Other forums that I am participate in are much stricter.  I would not want to participate in an completely uncensored format because it brings out the worst characteristics in people.

Not a fan of censorship in general.

If you're a bigot, then let the whole world see it. If you're just controversial, let people discuss it.

Personally, I'd be more akin to a big fat warning label saying "This content was flagged as inappropriate.", "This content contains unverified and possibly false information"., or "This poster has been flagged multiple times for inappropriate/controversial behaviors".

There should be some exceptions of course - ie) Contents that could potentially put someone in real danger, death threats, contents encouraging suicidal behavior, contents enomcouraging serious violence, etc...

I dislike censorship in general and hate the sensitiveness and political correctness nowadays even more.

HOWEVER, I think people do not get to say whatever the fuck they want. There's a place and time for everything. This is not about free speech; let's face it, nothing is "free". I think this pandemic has shown us that when we have no censorship of fake news or misinformation about anything, it causes a lot of trouble. Imagine if we have fewer conspiracy theories about Covid-19, would more people be more cautious about the pandemic and we might have a quicker economic recovery and fewer deaths? I sure would like to think so.

Government Censorship != Forum Censorship

The first amendment only protects you from government censorship and apparently a lot of people have a hard time understanding that.

If you want a community that is insightful and encourages professionals to participate you can't just post whatever you want. You would want to foster a community that isn't seen as conspiracy focused, racist, sexist or homophobic. You can't expect to have Aswath Damodaran to want to participate in a forum with posts that stereotype Indians. You can't expect to have a helpful community if people are inciting controversy.

There are plenty of places you can say whatever you want because that is their intended purpose isn't not to teach and help people looking to work in finance. In public, 4Chan, 8kun and Parler are good examples of places you can do that until you are blue in face.

I totally agree. I would have zero interest in participating in a forum that was completely uncensored.  In fact, I have participated in a couple of local forums that are uncensored and I quickly realized that I do not have much in common with the people who belong to these groups.
