What do you wear on vacation?
Before you start throwing monkey shit at this post, telling me "what is a vacation?", "are you seriously asking this question", "why do you care about what people think", etc. hear me out.
I've spent the last 5 or so years investing and accumulating a made to measure work wardrobe and fine leather shoes that fits my own personal style. I'm very confident in it, it makes me feel good, I don't spend anytime thinking about what I'm going to wear in the am. Its not something I think about.
But now that I've put my head down and worked for the last 5 years, I've decided to take two weeks off to get out of the office and relax at the beach. Now that it is a week away, I've realized that I do not own anything that resembles anything close to vacation wear.
What is your go to outfit? Are linens and panama hats a thing? Can I get away with wearing flip-flops?
Should I just shut the $%&@ up and go get hammered on fruity cocktails with umbrellas in them and not worry about what I'm wearing?
I'll just leave this here. What are you rocking on vacation?
Linens and pastels for tropical wear. Get some bows, boat shoes, casual dress shirts. If you're going someone where warm it's really just business casual or jeans and drivers. If I'm really exploring and looking at shit I have hiking sneakers and North Face pants I wear.
Traveling isn't something special where you need a whole new outfit. Just realize you'll be walking more and the weather might be very different. Basically what you wear on the weekend.
Just buy everything from banana republic
What's the hate with banana republic? Is it too low class for WSO? IMO its made with quality fabric n clean simple style......
I love Banana. Got myself a BR credit card. The bastards won't up my measly $250 credit limit though.
Currently, my non-work wardrobe consists of Dormeuil, Loro Piana with some old J.Press stuff I used to wear in college sprinkled in for good measure.
You wear Loro Piana on an analyst's salary?
Yes, I do wear Loro Piana.
You buying your Piana from the outlet? http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlet/woodbury-common/stores/loro-piana
Not gonna lie, I have.
Outlets are the best place to buy clothing. In my case, I actually have never physically bought a piece of Loro Piana clothing. All the Loro Piana I have are hand-me-downs.
P.S. I'm not sure why I am getting monkey shit thrown at me...
Shorts and Vineyard Vines/Southern Tide/Brooks Brothers-esque polos and/or casual buttondowns for getting food or sight seeing. Trunks and a t-shirt for the actual beach. Boat shoes or flip flops for your feet. Don't overthink it.
Definitely not the first two. They're what typical college students wear to pull off their idea of a preppy look. Go for something classy that doesn't have an ostentatious logo. Brooks Brothers and some Ralph Lauren are fine. I would personally go with a logo-less brand like J.Crew or Bonobos.
Both Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren have the exact same use of logos as Vineyard Vines and Southern Tide. In fact, Ralph Lauren is the only company of the four to offer the even more ostentatious "big pony" label.
damnnnn son. I just got the monkey shit. I guess no love for banana republic?
I personally like them because of simple clean look. I guess its not appealing for WSO folks?????
OP swag yourself from karmaloop. Bet I'll get monkey shit for this also.
You can wear anything you want and no one will care. Except a fedora/similar hats, never wear a fedora or a panama hat.
In my experience, you should be fine, as long as you don't look like a 'dad.'
It kind of cracks me up the level of thought you guys place on what to wear in "x" (not counting business because that's a given to address accordingly).
It's VACATIONI. Don't give a fuck about what to wear. I would hope the purpose of a vacation is to alleviate the needing to follow any rules or code and just chill the fuck out.
Pick a place that is full of scantily clad women, turn off the smart phone, and enjoy the luxuries you have worked so hard towards.
If you want to look like you're -
Older: Tommy Bahama Middle-aged: Peter Millar Recently graduated: J. Crew (logo-less), Ralph Lauren, Lululemon.
For shoes, some Sperry's or Cole Haan Grant's will suffice in the evenings. I'd say Rainbows but you won't want to deal with breaking them in.
Most importantly, drink as much as humanly possible the first few days giving yourself the last day or so to relax. And hope there will be scantily dressed college girls in the vicinity.
Nothing except sunglasses....
The beach? I buy v-neck t-shirts in bulk at $10 each from the local department store, and cycle through them. I get them in different colours, though, so don't say I don't get any variety - I get to choose between black, white, and grey!
Whatever my GF likes me to wear and if I am single: warm climates: short, t-shirt, straw hat, open top shoes. Cold to warm: Black or blue bottoms, grey, blue, black top with closed top shoes.
when on the beach/pool or in the water I'd recommend board shorts, flips flops and sunglasses. When out and about id do shorts, v neck shirt, polo, etc.
Assuming you didn't get too fat in your 5 years of hard work, a couple Hawaiians and Chubbies shorts.
As long as you don't stand out as looking terrible, you'll be fine. Plus, this question depends on your goals. Are you trying to relax? Or are you trying to chase some girls? If the former, go get hammered on fruity cocktails with umbrellas in them and don't worry about what you're wearing. If the latter, go with some of the above suggestions of a nice polo and shorts for walking around, and board shorts and a v-neck/t-shirt for the beach.
Watch Archer and dress like Sterling.
Light colored pants, pastel button downs. The lighter the material the better. I'd rather kill myself than wear a polo in summer heat/humidity. Light brown sperry boat shoes, see ya lata.
OP, I'm not great at casual but I do have my brands decided. This is what I buy: Shirts (https://www.etonshirts.com/us/shirts/green/) - Eton shirts - green label are my 100% go to. This is their casual line with the shirts ending at the waistline so it is perfect untucked - Another really solid shirt company is called "The New England Shirt Company"
Shorts - Peter Millar and Brooks Brothers shorts - they are made with higher quality materials than places like J Crew but can still be pastels and casual
Footware - TOD's loafers, sperry boat shoes and nice flip flops from anywhere you choose
Eyeware: - Persol wayfarer sunglasses
As a side note, I use Trunk Club occasionally. I used to live in Chicago so I got hooked when I could walk in and do it all in person. Don't use too much anymore. However, It may be worth your time to sign up and get a few casual clothing trunks shipped your way for the next vacation trip you plan.
personally, I wear a mix of fratboy attire (polos & pastel shorts) and dad attire (golf shirts, hawaiians).
which beach are you going to? you'll have a hard time closing ass if you go to charleston SC with a tommy bahama and some pastel shorts, but in the caribbean you might be alright.
caribbean / central america
bro, you'll be fine, don't worry about appearances. watch out for the hookers though, you don't want to have a mouth hug turn into a trip to the embassy because she stole your passport, cell phone, and all your cash.
if you're going to costa rica, PM me for recommendations (assuming you haven't been there before).
cowboy hat and cut off jeans (somewhat serious) (100% serious)
Wear a Metallica t-shirt and cargo shorts. Who really gives a shit? Vacation is supposed to be a time where you don't have to think about things like clothes too much.
Anything but jorts, as someone above suggested.
Get some decent board shorts and rainbows, that's all you really need during the day
Add an expensive waterproof watch if you want to show off your Associate 1 prestiiiiige
preftige*
BIg baggy swimming shorts, large Hawaiian shirt, shades and a straw hat.
You sound soo Midwest... it's either boardshorts, trunks, or baggies ... nothing else
