Are HFs any less prestige-attached than IBs? I know someone who went to UMD and then joined the P72 training programing and has been an analyst for 3 years now. Is this common or is the 2 years and out still the common path--this is what I was planning to do but I'd rather go straight into a HF...

The ib path is still the traditional path and leaves you with a better opportunity to explore what you want i.e. more options, but more funds have been opening up doors to undergrads. Places like citadel, p72, etc. have had structured summer internships that lead to FT offers, but more of the smaller/mid sized shops might have a seat for you if 1. you're lucky and there's an opening 2. you can show you have a proper investing mindset, know what you're doing, and are a better investment than some guy from a top ib group. Networking will help you a lot for the latter.
