What finance job would fit me?
Hey everyone,
I am just getting into the finance industry and trying to figure out what roles to look for since a lot of things are still pretty new to me (I am coming from law background).
What I know I definitely don't want to do is accounting, audit or anything of that nature. It seems to me like a monotonous, repetitive work with lots of data/numbers...something that a computer could do. But maybe I'm wrong.
On the other hand, what I am very passionate about is the corporate world, how businesses operate, their financing and strategy for further development and expansion, including making new deals, etc. I am also quite interested in capital markets, securities, commodities, etc.
In terms of my personality, I am very social, I love talking to people and make interpersonal connections. I feel like I have great social calibration which enables me to talk to anyone. I also speak 5 languages.
I am more of a team player than an individualist (I already experienced sitting alone in my office all day long as a lawyer, not talking to a single soul...I hated it). I am also very proactive and need to feel that the work I am doing is actually contributing to something bigger and also that I am constantly improving myself as well.
Last but not least, I would also like to be in a workplace where the people are ambitious and high achievers with the "can do" mentality, so that the standard is high and everyone is pushing the other one to be better.
Are there any finance areas/roles that would fit into this?
Proctor, way too quiet in here. What about these resources:
More suggestions...
I hope those threads give you a bit more insight.
Anyone has any suggestions?
If you're less into the nitty-gritty number punching and more into relationship management and strategy, then maybe private wealth management? Maybe Investor Relations? Business Development, Strategic Finance, maybe some Sales & Trading roles? Idk man, there's a ton of options
Actually, all of those areas that you mentioned sound pretty interesting to me. I am just not sure what should be the first step/role for me so that I can build up a good career going forward.
If you are a lawyer as stated then Investor Relations is probably the best option. My uncle studied journalism and went into IR and has done well, but lawyers are probably more common. Pay is not great but there is direct link to capital markets and business leadership. OR c*mpliance but I feel sick saying that.
Sometimes people with Investor Relations backgrounds are able to get into more Capital Raising type roles, and can make much more money later in their career. I think IR is overlooked as a career path
Capital markets and business leadership sounds very appealing to me. What are some specific job positions that I could apply for in those fields?
Also, may I ask why you said that it makes you feel sick when you mentioned compliance? Is it not a good field?
