What if I'm not interested in sports?

I know virtually nothing about what's going on in football, baseball, ice hockey, soccer, and I've never been an athlete or even close to one. Always thought them incredibly pointless.

What are some alternative paths to small talk that can last for over 15 minutes?

Politics, weather, other entertainment - lady gaga, fashion. My most effective small talk is to get them to talk about themselves; family, vacation, weekend activities, hobbies like skeet shooting/racing/etc. This should be fairly easy to determine based on your company. Sometimes they insist on sports which you will have to chime in with generics and shift the convo over during a lull.

If the glove don't fit, you must acquit!

Bugs just go to espn everyday and read the headlines and you'll be alright

Learn to be interested in sports for your own sake, as that's about the only interesting thing to watch on TV these days anyway. A huge number of people watch sports, and it doesn't take much time on ESPN.com or something to just have a few things to say for small talk.

Hi, Eric Stratton, rush chairman, damn glad to meet you.

Yea, Im guessing you lack a bit in social skills. Put down the books or video game controller and go out and meet people. This is how you figure out how to shoot the shit.

Travel, family, friends, what you did over the weekend (and if you did nothing make up something like you tried a new restuarant to keep conversation going.)

Juwanna MannYou could talk about not getting laid.

You could talk about fashion.

You could talk about your Pokemon collection.

Or the most plausable way to kill yourself....

Would you rather burn, drown, or fall to your death?

It's what you put into it

Just nod and agree with anything; anyone who follow this stuff assumes you know what's going on. The only ones who catch on are other guys in the same position as you......and then you should bring up global power politics because, well shit, it's kinda cool to know wtf is up over there.

I know allot of guys who are not into sports on the floor. This is in Europe though, the US could be different.

What are you talking about? You negged me for saying that? Remember people are from all over the world at IB's in Europe, interests are broad and no gives a flying fuck if you don't like football.

Leave it to awm to chime in with this fruity ass contrarian shit.

Fruity ass shit? Seriously?

I can't stop picturing you as the loud douche bag at the party who has a bright polo shirt on and drinks natty ice. I may be wrong though.

You're wrong because I'm the kind of guy that's terrified to leave my bed. But you're still fruity though. Nobody gives a shit that Europeans love kickball or dickball or whatever, men are trying to have a conversation here. Maybe you can learn something.

All I have learned is that I get douche chills whenever you make a comment. What is with you ? I grew up in the states and now work in Europe. Who gives a flying fuck, my comments are always going to be Europe centric.

You can call me fruity all you want, but saying that the OP is socially retarded for not knowing allot about sports is just fucking stupid.

Guess what, you're not hot shit...plenty of the Americans on this board have lived in Europe, including this asshole right here. In fact, I lived in Europe a lot longer than you might thing (longer than you have, probably.) Nobody gives a shit, we're not talking about Euro culture, we're American men talking the way American men do. Stop being such a fucking douche on the dick of Europe, nobody likes the "one time, at band camp..." person. Nobody gives a shit about Europe in this thread. It's out of sight, out of mind.

And you said it yourself, you're an American living in Europe so you post in a "Euro-centric" way. So why don't you go to a European website and act America-centric for once? Fucking fruitbag.

Didn't throw shit on you sorry, but you just equated the US and Europe... Have you heard of NCAA March Madness do you know how much work productivity goes down because of it? Do you have anything REMOTELY equivalent that people stop doing work because of a SPORTING event? It is much more socially acceptable in Europe than in US(to not follow sports).... When you go out to the bar with your friends, do you talk about how much your shoes cost or if the Lakers are going to make it to the NBA FInals...

awm your way of thinking never ceases to amazing me.....

jimbrowngoUThey have the World Cup and other soccer shit...

They? that implies the USA doesn't watch and enjoy the World Cup granted it isn't on as large a scale as in Europe but we still watch and enjoy the World Cup. This is my point, there is a large overlap.....American's in general love all sports so not being able to talk about sports is just one of those things. and talking about sports in Europe and USA isn't remotely comparable

jimbrowngoUMy question is... what is the trading floor like in Europe? I've been on a floor here in the U.S. and it's exactly as one would expect, but how is it different in Europe?

I am not saying its different, football, cricket, and rugby are always on the tv on the floor. I was just saying that everyone has broad interests and not being intensely into sports is just not a big deal.

As long as you are not socially retarded and can hold a conversation about something, no one is going to think less of you.
