My most effective small talk is to get them to talk about themselves; family, vacation, weekend activities, hobbies like skeet shooting/racing/etc. This should be fairly easy to determine based on your company. Sometimes they insist on sports which you will have to chime in with generics and shift the convo over during a lull.

Learn to be interested in sports for your own sake, as that's about the only interesting thing to watch on TV these days anyway. A huge number of people watch sports, and it doesn't take much time on ESPN.com or something to just have a few things to say for small talk.

Honestly, just read the headlines and a few stories on ESPN every couple of days and you should be fine.... I keep up with plenty of shit I don't particularly care about just so I can be informed and be able shoot the shit with different types of people.
