What major/minor works best with Finance?
Hello,
I am a sophomore at UIUC Gies Business (non-target). I am currently a Finance + Accounting major and have a 3.9+ GPA. I am already in the Finance Academy (1 of 3 Stanley Golder academies here) which usually are top 5% of finance students landing good offers. I am very much into technology which I was thinking might help me more if I learn a few languages on my own. However, I want to make myself as attractive as possible for landing a job in any disciplines of Corporate Finance/IB related careers.
I know my school is very good at Accounting (top 3 i think) but I am not sure if that matters a lot or at all, really.
Here are my options:
Finance + Accounting (popular at my school I heard)
Finance + Computer Science Minor (since we are known for CS but not very common)
Finance + Information Systems (a relatively new business major but doesn't teach any programming like the name might suggest)
Finance + anything else?
Are any of these good? Or, if anyone has a better suggestion of major combos please help me since I would love to get some advice from professionals.
Thanks in advance!
Finance generally should teach you all the skills you need to success, including the basic Accounting knowledge so doing a full on Accounting minor won't be of much use. You should pick the minor which is of most interest to you. You could argue that knowing more about computers and tech with CS may be a useful thing to have going forward, but if you were to pivot to a tech heavy role, that minor would cover 5-10% of the knowledge you would need to succeed. I personally think CS is really interesting (event the basics), so I would pick that. But again, dealers choice buddy.
Sorry for the delayed response as I am outside US right now.
However, I am also thinking for applying for some MFin programs in my senior year as a second option of my post-college career. Would you say any other majors with Finance that go well with that in particular or any advice in particular?
I'm finance & comp math and people seem to like it in my banking, trading, ER, and PE interviews.
Sorry for the delayed response.
We do not a have Computational Math major at my school. Do you think Statistics would work with it or no?
I don't think it matters as much tbh I just said the comp math gave me coding and statistics experience and helped me with problem solving given the courses I took. I took an AI class and they were interested in how I think AI could be applied to finance/PE
I majored in finance and minored in music out of interest! Guess what? People (junior and senior folks) love talking about the beatles, beach boys, bob dylan, etc.. more than dcf, fcf, and wacc during interviews and this always gave me a huge leg up in building a personal connection! But again, if computer science, econ, or math minors appeal a lot more to you then pursue them. Note that these minors can also drag your GPA up/down depending on your abilites so pick carefully. I scored straight As in my music classes and it pushed by cumulative GPA up from 3.2 to 3.5 so my 2 cents would be to pick wisely!
That's very interesting!
Out of curiosity, how does a minor get noticed when applying to jobs/internships? I never see a space to say what minor one is pursuing? It is always asking about the major.
