Whats The Hype With Fortnite
Okay so I have been playing Fortnite, which is a relatively new free game that has hit almost all gaming platforms. I have gotten addicted to it (to an unhealthy level). I just don't want to put the controller down every time I play. I have been playing video games for years but I have never been this addicted to a game before. I cant put my finger on why this game is so different and more fun to play than the rest because its just a shooter game at the end of the day. Any of you guys played it? And have you been as addicted as me or am I just a crazy fanatic.
I was on a few month streak of playing this game for a couple hours a day. Granted I've recently snapped that streak but the main things that kept me coming back were:
Scenery and graphics. The layout is beautiful. It has a cartoon feel but doesn't look cheesy. Game play is also really smooth unless its lagging.
How competitive it is. Ton of people are fortnite and i'm pretty sure that at least 1x a day I get trolled by a twelve year old. Although that makes me want to break the controller I just end up laughing and playing 'one more game'.
Cross platform. Doesn't matter if your friends have a different system you guys can still all hop on and play.
Building. This is what gives fortnite an edge over other first person shooters like cod, battlefield etc. In those games whoever gets the first bullet off usually wins the shootout, in fortnite you can build and get yourself out of some pretty bad situations. The only difference between good fortnite players and great players are building skill.
Ton of things to master. Different guns have different bullet drops, and no gun shoots the same. You also have to learn to build which is a pain. There's also some strategy involved.
Not as much camping. I loved black ops 1&2. The only thing I hated about those games were the camping and spawn killing. Fortnite makes it near impossible to camp with the shrinking circle. Although there is still a little bit of camping its no where near comparable black ops 1&2.
I just can't believe this many people have this kind of free time in their day-to-day schedule.
Bro I make time. I dont have time to hang out with my buddies from home or plan ahead to do something fun, but fitting in an hour of fortnite when I get home late and getting 6 instead of 7 hours of sleep if worth it to me if i can get some laughs/dubs with the boys and see how my friends are doing.
Sweet, bro. I personally need more than 6 hours to function.
Yeah dude playing with the boys has got to be one of the best things to kick back and chill after a stressful day. Playing online games with buddies takes the inconvenience out of finding a time when everyone is free to meet in real life
I don't know how the genes of video game nerds survive onto the next generation. I can't imagine what women sleep with them.
Yeah I bet someone with the maturity level to create an account named "real_skankhunt42" really ticks all the boxes for women...
Wow with a well thought out comment like that you must absolutely slay. Not everyone who plays fortnite is a fuckin "nerd"
I enjoy videogames but don't really like playing online. I enjoy sports games against personal friends and single player games like Horizon: Zero Dawn. As such, I will never play Fortnite. Which is good because apparently that shit is addictive (I have a buddy who is addicted).
Only thing left to do is confirm whether Bob likes Metal Gear Solid games.
I enjoy MGS games. Too bad they're done.
Recently, I like battle royale genre the most. Probably due to its competitive gameplay which induces adrenaline surge, the satisfying feeling when you eliminate someone else in the game, and the exhilaration when you win the match. However, it's been 4 months since the last time I played Fortnite. The game is fun, yeah, but luckily i'm not addicted to it, or any other battle royale game.
Yeah I definitely agree with you about the competitive nature and the accomplished feeling of actually winning a match, probably because there is 100 people in a single game so it makes me feel like I'm the top 1%, hey at least I can be the top 1% in something.
The game looks so shitty. Don't know what the hypes about. I can't watch it for more than 5 minutes without getting bored.
I don't like the game too much but it is super successful for a few reasons. 1) It's free and on all the big platforms with cross platform play (other than ps4) 2) Constant updates keep the game from getting too stale 3) Since lots of people play it, the entertainment behind it has grown (twitch and yt) which keeps people engaged) 4) Skins keep people playing because they feel like they aren't spending money on the game (the average person has spent over $90 on the game) 5) It is bright and cartoony which is nice 6) Limited time modes are unique and keep it kind of fresh 7) When something gets this big people just join in cuz their friends do it
Yeah I think the free aspect made a lot of people interested in the game (me). People have spent $90 on it? Thats insane haha considering its a free game aswell. What I wonder is, does the company make a profit from the game through selling skins, or is it all of these pro players in tournaments that bring most of the revenue in
Skins have been there money earner because the AVERAGE person spends 90 on the game which is insane.
Reminds me of a less creative version of GunZ: The Duel (which was the most skill based shooter back in the day)

Never heard of this game before but looks pretty legit. I dont play on PC because I can barely type, let alone move my fingers that fast. (Insert fingering joke here)
The game had a massive following for PC gamers in 2008-2009. Probably didn't hear of it because they came out with a second version (on steam) that was a massive failure (removed the skill based moves which made it popular in the first place)
Gunz was fucking sick. Loved that game
I'm usually pretty big on gaming, but Fortnite never caught on for me. Just looks and feels like a cartoony/childish game to me. I had a bit of an addiction with PUBG mobile though (played on my 10.5" iPad screen), but took a break for a while when I got busy and never really picked it back up.
There are several big names dropping over the course of the next year though so I am pretty hyped about that.
what big names?
off the top of my head black ops 4 is supposed to be dropping
Hm well PS E3 was "epic" this year. I'm looking forward to the last of us 2 and Spiderman. Days Gone looks like it's turning out to be a disappointment but World War Z looks sick. Anthem is supposed to be another big one. Oh and Dying Light is getting a sequel. The list goes on. My favorite genre is survival horrors so plenty new ones being released for me to kill time on.
I'm in love with Halo (weird, I know) and have been tracking competitive gaming since Halo 2. I tried League of Legends aka LoL and have fun with it, but I'm just not very good.
I tried Fortnite last month and couldn't get into it
My first ever video game was Halo 3. It was actually such a good game, always got shat on by the COD community. Cunts. There is so much nostalgia attached to Halo for me. That classic soundtrack
Fortnite is great because it's free, snackable, and massive. Plus there's fun gameplay. You don't have to spend 100 hours of gameplay to use the best gun (COD), you don't have to purchase anything so everyone can play and that leads to a critical mass, and it's snackable. The longest a match can last is about 15 mins... if you have to wait 10 mins for a friend to show up, a show to come on, a scheduled call, etc... you can get a match in. If you die you can start playing again within less than a minute. Not only that but you play on your own schedule, no waiting for a match to end, no waiting in the lobby, no bad maps to play through, Lastly, there's an element of finality because when you die you lose. It makes things seem riskier which I think contributes to the adrenaline.
Yep thats exactly what I do if I have a free 30 mins in my day, just hop on and grab a few games whilst drinking a cold brew. Does life get any better.
I don't necessarily disagree with how Fortnite differs from COD/etc., but I think its inaccurate to attribute those qualities as a reason for the games mainstream success. All of the things you pointed out are not 100% exclusive to Fortnite...there are other games out there that have snack sized matches, are free-to-play, etc. I see a lot of SS research citing the battle royale mode as a reason for its success which I also disagree with.
Fortnite just happens to be a fun game. A fun game is gonna be a successful game. Sort of like movies, yet everyone tries to peg the success of future movies to its conformity to current trends (like superhero flicks) but that is always still a toss up.
The reality here is that Fortnite's attractive qualities have been the standard for a lot of PC-only games for a couple years now and these have proven to be popular. Fortnite just happens to be the first one of these that have broken into the mainstream console player base. (In my opinion, the PC market is a very good leading indicator of console).
I think the headline story with Fortnite is really how much $ its made being a free-to-play game, only generating revenues from in-game micro-transactions. That this model can be so successfully executed should be making ATVI / EA run scared.
Refreshing to hear a differing opinion, I do agree with when it comes to movies, games etc it can be hit or miss. There are those games that you have mentioned before COD etc that have been extremely popular in the past, but do you think it has been hyped as much as fortnite has been? It just shocks me to see how it's completed taken over the media. Everybody I know has played the game or continues to do so.
Yeah totally agree with how crazy it is that the game is profiting off of in-game purchases, the fact that it is free is making up it's player base for sure and probably tempts people to make in game purchases because other people are doing it.
There are days I feel like a detestable, four-eyed geek loser low-life. Then I read threads like this one and I think, "Hmm, maybe I'm not so bad after all."
Usually I like the quality of your posts but I'm not seeing it with the ones in this thread.
What's your beef with video games? In an age where everyone is connected on the internet (and where, for a lot of us, this is the primary vehicle for getting on mic with your buddies from college to catch up), what's so wrong about this hobby versus another?
Because video games are for children and for adult losers, not for men.
I don't play, but I do find the degree to which Fortnite has been able to penetrate mainstream pop culture impressive. Seeing Drake streaming with Ninja and Antoine Griezmann celebrating his penalty kick goal in the World Cup final with the "Take the L" dance is a bit surreal.
The impact that this game has had is insane. All the media attention it is getting is crazy, like you said, professional footballers doing dances from the game and celebs and the like playing it on YT. It has had an effect that I dont think any other games have had on the media.
A quick snapchat article I saw about the game
Will the hype continue or is it bound to end and the game never be heard of again?
