Which FT roles to apply to with no summer internship? (London)

What it says on the tin. Which gradaute roles at investment banks would I have the best chance at (assuming good grades and extracurricular). Please don't just say operations hahaha.

I know I don't have a fiddler's chance in heaven for FT IB, but how would I fair in adjacent roles like Corporate Banking, Equity Research etc.

ER - arguably more competitive than IB given that there’s a tenth of the headcount. Maybe at a 3rd rate shop

Corp Banking - maybe as some third rate banks? You aren’t getting into a BB corp banking ft with no work experience unless you’re diversity at a top target

S&T - lol no

Ops, compliance etc grad schemes might be better suited. Conversely a lot more boutique/smaller consultancies you could have a shot at

Depressing, but as I suspected. I do go to Warwick but have a fat 0 on the diversity bingo.

How competitive would you say the Tech grad schemes at banks are without relevant work experience?

I must admit thatt I am absolutely clueless when it comes to MO/BO functions and not afraid to say it.

Not sure why you’d want to do tech at a bank if you could do something much cooler and get paid more or less the same at a start up or get paid much better at a big tech firm. Banks are great for front office, not sure I’d recommend any other roles at banks - people will treat you like shit because you are not at the core of what they do.

As to why tech at a bank:

  • There's a lot more banks than big tech firms in London + the banks are a lot more rigorous with training offered for tech roles.
  • The big tech firms generally expect a plethora of progamming skills as they target computer science students (I'm only a humble engineer).
