Why don't you have a job yet?

I had the intial phone interview for a job I REALLY want today. The guy was very nice, knew I had contacted people in the company before, knew I knew the basics of the position, etc. etc.

We had a pretty nice talk, we were hitting it off, but then he asked a question that threw me off. He asked why I thought I hadn't found a job yet. I stumbled and answered that I hadn't done enough networking while in school, missed out on the normal recruiting periods, and jobs are scarce now...you get the picture.

I'm going to send him a thank you email tomorrow, should I include something about the state of the economy / elections? For instance..."regarding why I haven't secured a position yet, I think partially companies are holding back on hiring until the election plays out and the looming fiscal cliff is dealt with." Or something else. And honestly I haven't found anything I've wanted as much as this (which might have contributed to why I haven't gotten anything yet)

Good idea? Bad idea?
