Working with incompetent people in banking
Will currently analysts or associates post a few experiences relating to working with "how the fuck did you get hired" type of people?
I know a few incompetent people from school who got BB offers. How do you guys deal with ppl like that?
I would say that, in general, everyone I work with is bright enough to be a successful banker. However, we all do really dumb stuff every now and then. Some do so a lot more than others. I've heard some pretty crazy stories though, such as a guy who missed his flight because he was zoning out playing with his i-pod.
I've worked with a few moron analysts, but fortunately my associates and VP's have been excellent. I've seen idiots get hired by top groups.
Socially impaired they may be but intellectually there's a general minimum standard unless they lied about their scores ;)
depends on product. I know a cat who got pinched off in commodities who was a complete moron - demand can breed being surrounding by idiots.
of the analysts i've dealt with are pretty intelligent. There are a few kids from nontargets that I found to be a little slower in catching on things, but not stupid by any means.
I was really lucky though because in general, my group is really on top of its game, and the senior guys are very hands on with everything. However, we unfortunately have to deal with a lot of other divisions, and the associates and vp's tend to be less than par (not in intelligence, but in sheer laziness and trying too hard to be a boss). It's interesting because at some point, it's obvious they were motivated, hardworking, etc.

I assume you are contemplating your own chances of being hired and wondering how people will treat you once they realize you are one of those "type of people"?

In my experience the analysts from nontargets are among the most motivated and most successful. Not saying that the analysts from targets aren't bright and intelligent, but I think the only good a target does for you is put your foot in the door first.
