How to approach Buyside Recruiting

Fellow investor apes,

Starting out, most have doubts about what investing seats to chase during on/off-cycle. Some are passionate about an industry, some about a strategy, some about $ and prestige.

While there is a prevalence of the 'MF or bust' or even 'large-cap buyout or bust' mentality in the younger classes, some of us are skeptic about deferring to this paradigm, and yet it is really hard to think about what one wants to do two years out.

What is your advice on forming this set of preferences, especially with headhunter chats picking up where questions about strat/ind/geos come up every time? What was your own process like, and how do you think it went for you on your path?

Thank you for any info on this!
