Ok so I'm curious, where do most IB analysts live at if they work in NYC? Do most people commute in from the surrounding area or accept the cost, get an apartment in manhattan and experience what NYC has to offer in those one to two free hours you get a month?

Most banks are on/near Park Ave, so that makes Midtown East and Murray Hill popular.

Up there you have JPM, Citi, Moelis, Evercore, Sandler O'Neill, Rothschild, Greenhill, Centerview, Perella Weinberg, Lazard, Deutsche Bank, BAML, Houlihan Lokey, Barclays, UBS, Sagent Advisors, Morgan Stanley, Cantor Fitzgerald, Blackstone, Jefferies, Piper Jaffray, BMO, BNP Paribas, and dozens more...

GS, ML, and Oppenheimer are the only ones left close to FiDi.

Some errors:
Deutsche Bank is on Wall Street
MS, Barclays and BAML are more Times Square than Midtown East
Citi is in Tribeca

You're right about DB, and I said some are NEAR Park Ave (relative to FiDi), but Citi is still headquartered on Park Ave.

Kind of on topic: Is living in FiDi as shitty/boring as most people say it is?

It's not as lifely as other parts of Manhattan, but you're not further away from MPD than the people who live UES.
There are quite a few nice bars in FiDi - I'd recommend walk around and see it for yourself.
