Who has the nicest office? Or that you've heard of.

Check out Mayor Bloomberg's bullpen with chandeliers, columns and all.

I thought this was going to be IB offices. I haven't been to all of them in NYC, but from the one's I have seen, CS at 23rd and Madison was very nice.

Generally speaking, the

Generally speaking, the hedge funds tend to have the nicest offices. Banks tend to have the worst.

true. Lehman Brothers new york was nice. Citigroup was mediocore in my opinion. IB offices can't compare with some of the PE ones i've seen here in Toronto and in NY.

UBS Stamford hands down. I had an interview there once and it was fantastic. Ridiculous trading floor and offices. It is, of course, in Stamford though.

I interviewed, I really liked the GS offices. Despite the extremely painful, full day interview process, the view from some of the offices that overlookethe water were pretty sweet.

Bain

a friend interviewed with blackstone, said their offices were nice. so are kkr's apparently.

i personally liked bain's new york office a lot. didn't care for any of the banks' offices. they all seemed similar.

I thought Lazard had nice offices - some analysts were doubled up in offices, and the conference room views are nice.

ML London is pretty bad-ass. Had interviews in the conference area - which is also presumably where they take people to fire them. Go figure.

My vote for best bank office

My vote for best bank office goes to Lazard (top ~10 floors of the GE building) and best PE office goes to KKR (relatively high up the Solow building). I'm rather partial to a good view, plus these two sets of offices are done up very nicely as others have mentioned earlier.

Don't know many consulting or HF offices.

Any votes for best offices in other cities?

Some of the European

Some of the European consulting offices in "old" Europe are sick. I personally like Google NYC, it's housed in this big warehouse looking building on 9th ave and it's vintage google (big bouncy balls everywhere, glass walls, open spaces). If you are looking for opulence, wasn't too impressed with a few of the MM PE places I saw but I am guessing large cap PE probably has it covered. Some of the large hedge funds are just over the top- one fund that shall remain nameless basically has model-hot women as admins but very mediocre offices. But there are quite a few, especially the ones in CT, that are unbelievable.

But yeah, investment banks should not even enter the discussion... any large buyside firm will blow any bulge bracket out of the water in that sense.

buyside vs sell side

Exactly. Investment banking groups, especially if part of a public company, are not supposed to be extravagant. Bankers' fees are high enough as it is; you don't want clients coming in and wondering if the million dollar artwork on the wall is an indication that these guys are getting paid too much. The one exception I've heard about is Allen & Co, which has a very classy office on 5th. I think they have butlers that come by at the touch of a button.

Now, any buyside firm is more likely to have an incentive to splurge on office niceties. When it's fundraising time, and a big investor walks in wondering if these guys can make him richer, it might help to show signs of wealth. See Sequoia Capital for example. I think they're the one with the shark tank in the lobby or whatever it is.

Yeah, I interviewed at Allen

Yeah, I interviewed at Allen & Co and can confirm the butler thing. I also worked with them while they were co-manager on an IPO. Their offices are nice in the "old money" sense, nice artwork, etc.

I'd still prefer our offices over theirs, though. Ours aren't nearly as opulent as KKR financial's above.

Can you describe what is "opulent" about KKR's office, I am curious I have never seen it.

KKR

the link is for KKR Financial's offices in SF (looks pretty sweet from the pictures listed)

i think all PE shops have such nice offices that, after a while, they all start to feel the same

though KKR menlo park has a very old-money/country club feel to it (not a high rise since it is MP) -- wood is all mahogany or something, reception area has a library and a black/white tv playing clips from old classics... they also have waitstaff on site. one of my interviewers clicked a button on the table in our interview room and some lady showed up asking me if i wanted tea/coffee/cookies/food/etc... pretty ridiculous

TPG's SF offices remind me a lot of the KKR financial pics, but they don't feel too different from Bain Cap Boston (might be moving to the Hancock Tower from 101 Huntington) and THLee

that's pretty damn opulent, even for KKR

If that chef is some really creative, talented guy, don't you think the constant requests for grilled cheese sandwiches would begin to grate after a while?
