Question for international students on h1b visa stamping

Has anyone gone through the h1b Visa stamping process as a first year analyst?

If so, how did you manage to travel across the border / take time off from work (heard first years don't get any vacation and the stamping process takes about a week) ?

Also, if anyone has gone through the h1b Visa stamping in Canada, exactly how long did the entire process take? (review on other locations are also appreciated!)

thanks.
