Most popular client cities
As a Consultant in the UK, a lot of the projects I'm assigned to are either in London or large towns and cities. In my experience, the majority of clients I've worked with are probably confined to 5 cities/towns
I'm wondering what it's like in the US as I'm considering long term prospects - obviously it would be a higher number of cities due to its size, but I'm wondering if the majority of the clients for MBB, Deloitte, Accenture etc are based in commonly recurring cities, e.g. New York, San Francisco, Miami, Boston, Chicago etc. How common is it for consultants in these companies to get put on projects in small towns/cities with not much going on?
Depends on the team you're in and the clients you serve. Some FIG projects can land you in Charlotte or Minneapolis (smaller cities for US standards), some pharma/biotech ones also send you to smaller areas (a lot of biotech clusters around Boston and SF but far enough that you don't get to enjoy the cities). A&D is probably famous for many companies having HQ or major operations in the middle of bumfuck, nowhere. Yes, Boeing in in Chicago but Raytheon is in Waltham, General Dynamics in Reston and Norhtrop Grumman is in Falls Church. I would say the main determining factor is the industry you get staffed on. If you actively express preference for industries that do not need "high-profile" HQs in major cities, be ready to travel to some remote-ass places.
thank you! makes sense - good to know there are some industries that are known to be present in some cities. i'll be honest, i haven't heard of a couple of the cities you've put down! i have a pharma/biotech backgrdound so Boston and SF sounds appealing for sure
Limited perspective from my firm - SF, Chicago, NY and Dallas seem to the biggest offices and client pools across most domains. Maybe throw Miami, Boston, Houston in there for more niche teams.
thanks, so mostly he usual suspects for you!
Hi there, incoming tier-2 strat consultant in London here.
Where are these 5 primary cities/towns which you talk of?
