I applied online through the firm’s website. Shortly after, I was contacted directly by the Executive Assistant from the New York office to confirm my background details and availability. The communication was straightforward and professional. There were no online tests or assessment centers — the process moved directly to interviews.

I was then invited to a virtual interview with an Associate from the London office. The interview lasted around 45–60 minutes and was conducted online. The conversation started with typical fit questions such as “Walk me through your resume,” “Why M&A?” and “Why a boutique firm?” The interviewer was particularly interested in understanding my previous internship experience, what I actually did on transactions, and how much responsibility I had.

The second part of the interview focused on technical questions. I was asked to explain the main valuation methods, walk through a DCF step by step, and describe the M&A process from start to finish. The questions were focused on fundamentals rather than very advanced technical details. They mainly wanted to see whether I could explain concepts clearly and in a structured way.

Submitted my resume through their website. Was contacted to set up phone interview which lasted about 30 with an associate of the firm. I got a follow up email about a day later which outlined a project for me to complete over the weekend. I had to create a 1 page summary of a potential M&A target. It consisted of basic company data (location, divisions, what it did etc.) and some financial information: NI, Current Ratio etc. I was invited to NYC for final round interview but I had already received another offer.
Interview Questions
Walk me through the accounting of a capital lease. This was by far the toughest question. Other than this it was pretty standard fit/technical questions you would expect for an IB interview.

Next was putting together a company profile.

Went to NY for some inperson interviews. First two were mostly behavioral, third was 2 on 1 and mostly technical and current event based, and last one was a mix.

Had a first round interview over the phone with the director of the New York office. Then had to put together a small presentation about a company they were analyzing as a possible takeover candidate. Then had to pay my own way to New York for 6 more interviews. The first interview (2 on 1) was basically all technical but mostly accounting and a few valuation questions. The next several interviews were mostly behavioral but every person asked at least one technical question.
Interview Questions
A lot of the questions were behavioral such as weaknesses and what I have found to be difficult in the past. What was the biggest risk you have ever taken? Talk about a time you were a leader/follower and how you work in each. Talk about a time when you were busy or had to really work hard.
Technical questions were the typical accounting questions. Depreciation, buying inventory with cash, non recurring items, how to get to free cash flow; things such as that. Also asked about the different techniques of valuing a company and when where and why you would use each. A little more questioning was given on DCF but other techniques were also questioned.

The interview was standard. Took me through the basic questions such as 'walk me through your resume' and delved deeper on specific points along my resume. Touched on basic technicals like walk me through DCF, Coms, and precedent transactions.

There wasn't a difficult question. But I ran into trouble when she opened the floor to questions. I asked 'What is your most memorable moment at the firm?'
The interviewer stumbled when I asked this questions and when I asked for feedback, one of their response were that they felt it as if I was interviewing them at the end. I guess it might have been the way I phrased the question. In retrospect, a better way to have phrased it would have been, 'What was the most interesting deal that you have worked on in this firm?'
