Met with the recruiter for the role and did a 15-minute phone screen, most questions were behavioral and about my background and interests. Then got to meet with the department head and did a 45-minute interview diving into my background, with some questions about theoretical situations and how my skills fit with Janney's needs.

Applied online to a position in the Philadelphia office after speaking to a VP. MD reached out the following day for a phone interview on that Saturday. Monday was two more interviews via Zoom - one VP and the other the Group Head. Final interview was with another MD. Offer came 1 week after I applied. All fit and background questions. I am lateraling from a valuation role, so technical questions weren't necessary.
Interview Questions
All questions were expected and very straightforward.

Interview
Discovered through university recruitment. Once identified as a potential candidate was passed on to an analyst for an initial call followed by calls with two senior associates. All communication was initially done via email and then a phone call, no in-person or review steps.

The culture of the firm seemed more relaxed than new york counterparts. It seemed to be very important that you were curious in all coverage groups and offerings as all analysts are generalists. Additionally, it can be noted that there is no training program for incoming analysts.

The interview was very fit based and they seemed to care a lot about wanting to live within Philadelphia.
Interview Questions
-Why Janney? Why do you think you would be a good fit here?

-What are the three ways to value a company? What about a fourth way?

-Which valuation method typically results in the highest amount paid?

-Tell me about something you read about the market recently.

-Aside from these questions everything was extremely fit based. They were more interested in what you thought of living within the area and working with others on the team. They seemed to want to have a good ability to sell yourself and speak to what motivates and interests you.

Interview
First round interview with two analysts. Walk me through your resume. Then some basic behavioral questions. Definitely why investment banking and why Janney specifically. Be somewhat knowledgeable about Philadelphia. One technical question about the three financial statements and how net income is connected to cash flow. Then a second round phone call with a VP. Be prepared for the same thing as the first but with more grilling of your resume. Be able to walk through three financial statements. Four days later I got a phone call saying I got the offer.
Interview Questions
No question was really that difficult. My first round I still didn’t know much about accounting and couldn’t answer some basic technicals but that’s about it. If you can go through your resume and defend every point you’re fine.

Interview
First round phone interview with two analysts. Superday in Philadelphia with analysts, associates, VPs, and MDS.
Interview Questions
Both the phone interview and the superday were mostly behavioral questions. It is a smaller firm so they want to make sure you will be a good fit. The technical questions were standard IB interview questions, nothing too difficult at all.
- valuation methods? highest to lowest?
- walk through DCF
- wacc?
- common multiples used?
- connections between financial statements?

Most of the technical questions involved these topics and built off of them. Know the equations that go with these topics.

So far so good. Had an on-campus interview and the interviewer was super nice. Asked straightforward questions.
Interview Questions
Nothing was too difficult, so I don't have as much to write about here as I would like. I would recommend knowing why you want to go into banking as opposed to other industries and be able to tell your story well. Since they are based in Philadelphia, it's important that you are interested in staying there long term as well. I'm sure it will be more intense in the following rounds than the on-campus filtering process, but my overall vibe was that it would be a great place to work, and they want you to succeed.

Resume drop on campus, then there was a phone call. Mix of technical and behavioral questions, not too bad.
Interview Questions
What do you know about our firm? Why Janney Montgomery Scott? Everything was honestly very standard, they won't try and trip you up but it also depends on who interviews you. Just prep the basic behaviorals and technicals and you're probably good to go. Pretty much everything was expected -- maybe read up on the markets beforehand and make sure you can speak to some recent transactions and have an opinion on them. Look at the classic interview prep guides. Just be confident and you will be fine.

Applied via campus career services. First round was a very quick phone interview, and was called in for a final round interview of 5 one on one interviews with different managers and analysts. I ultimately interned for Public Finance and Fixed Income; all of my interviews (with the exception of one ER guy) were from those two departments.
Interview Questions
I received two brainteasers: 1. What is the average revenue of the Starbucks in Times Square? What is their biggest expense? and 2. You're driving a race car on a one mile oval track. You drive one lap at 30 MPH. How fast do you have to drive the second lap in order to average 60 MPH for BOTH laps?

The rest of the interview was honestly pretty straight forward. I was asked some basic accounting problems, some basic DCF questions, and a lot of fit questions. Janney emphasizes fit above everything else.

Very easy behavioral interview. I had mostly studied technicals but was not asked anything technical during this interview.

Interview
Sent a cold e-mail to somebody in the banking group who then set up a phone interview with a current analyst. The phone interview was very informal and the analyst interviewing me was very personable and laid-back. I was invited to an on-site interview but declined as I had already accepted an offer elsewhere.
Interview Questions
Very standard banking interview questions:

"Why investment banking?"
"Why our firm?"
"What are the different valuation methods?"
"Walk me through a DCF."
