Interview
The interview process was very straightforward. After applying a few days alter I was sent a link to complete a HireVue, which consisted of 5 questions. They were very cookie-cutter and what you would expect with questions such as: “Why are you the best candidate for this position?” “If you could learn something new in 30 days, what would it be and why?” “What have you done to prepare for this position?” “Tell me about something not on your resume.” “Why SMBC?” Around a month later, I received an invite to a superday. The superday consisted of 3 separate interviews with a 30-minute break in between each. I met with a Director in Industrials, an MD in FID, and a VP in Latin American Private Banking. The interview was entirely behavioral, where they were looking for me to demonstrate fit over any sort of technical skills. There was overall a lot of resume grilling and grilling specific experiences that would be relevant or that I framed to be relevant to the work that I would be doing at SMBC. It was extremely conversational with all 3 interviewwrs being extremely friendly. The only “technical question” that they asked was picking my brain about interest rates and what is affecting lending in today's market and economy.
Interview Questions
I mean, the interview overall stayed within my expectations; it was clear that there was an emphasis on leading and interest rate questions. This is due to the fact that the job is largely corporate banking, as they outsource M&A to Jefferies. I got a lot of questions simply trying to understand my intuition around lending and seeing how plugged in I was to current market conditions, how they are affecting the lending landscape, and how I think that will change or not change in the future. One of the interviewers solely focused on who I was and my personality, which I wasn't expecting from a superday, but it was clear they wanted to see if I was conversational and a well-rounded person. Asking me questions about what I do in my free time, how my friends would describe me, and why I think my personality would be a good fit for investment banking. If I had to choose a single hardest part, I would say the resume grilling as it wasn't asking me to recite experiences, but rather to articulate aspects of them that are relevant to the job, and asking about very specific details. For example, I had done a full stock pitch for Home Depot at the Tuck Business Bridge program and was asked about a recent acquisition by Home Depot's biggest competitor and how that affected my take on the company.

Applied online, got a hirevue 4 days later. A month after submitting the hirevue I was invited for a Superday. I got the schedule for the superday the day before, it consisted of 5 30 minute interviews with either VPs or Directors. It was completely behavioral. Got asked tell me about yourself, why SMBC, why this role. Was asked to go into further detail about some of my experiences that were related to the role. Had at least 10-15 minutes each interview to ask them questions. The team was great and the interview went really well. Got the offer about 24 hours after my superday via a phone call from the recruiter.

Interview
Applied when applications dropped and then signed up for all their on-campus recruiting events. Spent basically the entire day with them for OCR. Did my HireVue later that week and received an interview invite not too long after. Four interviews, 20 minutes each, only one interviewer. No technical questions. Mostly why SMBC and why CIBC. Don't remember being asked any situational questions either. Generally very chill interviewing process. Received the offer the day after my interviews. My advice would be learn as much as you can about SMBC (OCR and the slide decks you can find about their different divisions), networking helps (though I only did 1 coffee chat but they really helped me), and have a strong story to tell about yourself and why SMBC.
Interview Questions
Generally, nothing out of the ordinary. One interviewer did ask me to talk about some current economic issues, but nothing very difficult.

Initially met them at on-campus coffee chats and speakers event. They said to keep in contact as I applied and let them know when I completed the Hireview. After the Shoreview I heard back about the superday in a couple weeks, and had a superday with six different interviews with a wide range of interviewers (ranging from a first year analyst to an executive director). Not horribly technical, some light questions about "describe project finance" and "how is project finance different than other debt underwriting?"
Interview Questions
There were not any exceptionally difficult questions. Some more broad questions about describing what exactly project finance is and how it is different from other debt underwriting but very few hard technical questions.

2 rounds of interviews. First interview was purely motivational with 3 VPs. Second Interview was with one VP and had some technical questions but these were very basic.
Interview Questions
Questions weren't particularly difficult at all as it was for the placement scheme. Maybe what is asset recycling as it's uncommon terminology in the regard to Corporate Banking.

Skills Test
Interview
Applied school's internship programme and the school gave me a nomination.
Instructed by the school to apply through the official company careers portal.
First, was a test to summarise articles, first a Chinese article and simmering it in English. Then an English article and simmering it in Chinese.
Then it was an HR interview online and an in-person interview at their office. HR interview was in English and Cantonese and asked mostly behavioural and motivational questions. In-person interview with people from the Corporate advisory division was mostly in Japanese and a little Mandarin, focused on skillsets.
Interview Questions
Was a question asking my views on how Chinese and Japanese companies should cooperate. The question was asked in Mandarin and due to both language and the question itself, and insight required doe the question, did not answer well.

I first applied in July and after a few weeks was invited to do a hirevue. This consisted on common questions that can be found online. I was then given 1 hour to accept an invite to a superday. I was given one day notice and the superday consisted of 5 20-minute 1-on-1 interviews. The questions consisted of mostly behavioral and some brain teasers. It wasn't bad at all.
Interview Questions
I was asked a brain teaser about a baseball bat and a ball. That was probably the most challenging problem. Other questions consisted of tell me a about a time etc.

Interview
For the summer leveraged finance analyst position, it consisted of a hirevue, and then a subsequent super day about one month later. The super day was 5 different 30-minute breakout rooms over the course of 3 hours (9 am-12 pm for me), and about 3 of the 5 interviews had a couple of technicals at the end of each interview (MDs, directors, etc. didn't ask technicals) with one room being a technical heavy room with about 10ish basic and advanced questions (advanced were geared towards specifically leveraged finance).
Interview Questions
The hardest question asked was what were the primary financial covenants when it came it debt. All other questions were basic accounting, DCF, and valuation questions.
