I worked in both briefly and have a lot of contacts currently at both. I actually was the IB side of the business then contemplated quitting to start my own business. Fortunately, I had a mentor that advised me to go into commercial banking to specifically profile the competitors that I would have if I went the start up route. I soaked up all the knowledge I could from commercial banking (surprisingly more there, in my opinion, than IBD) and left to risk it in the small business world.
