Hey folks, I have a good friend who is a Principal with Bain and who has said he would be willing for me to use his name in my application. Does anyone know how this can be done? Is there an opportunity in the application process to include a referral from a Principal?

This would be done internally. There is nothing you need to add on your application.
When I applied on the joinbain website, there is a section (I think the very last section), where you can add the name of a referral. I dont remember if you need any other information, but there is definitely a section for it.
The best thing that your friend could do is after you submit your resume, would be to then tell HR that this person just submitted his application. He's good, I'll vouch for that.
Yes, just adding it on the online application may not be enough especially if you are coming from a non-traditional background

In my case, I was internally referred and then asked by recruiting to still apply formally online. There is indeed a field where you can indicate your referral.
Also pretty easy to put in cover letter.
Dear etc etc,
I am applying for etc etc
I came to learn about the firm from (insert name of Principal) and was struck by (interesting fact/compelling part of Bain value prop)
Rest of cover letter etc etc
Rinse and repeat.
There is actually a box on the joinbain.com online application that asks you to list any referrals.
You should also drop his name into your cover letter.
