Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about the types of cases typically encountered in BCG and Bain interviews:

BCG Case Interviews

  1. Round 1 (R1):

    • Market Sizing: These are quick, quantitative exercises to test your ability to estimate and structure problems logically.
    • Profitability Analysis: A classic case type where you analyze declining profits and identify root causes (e.g., costs, revenues, market trends).
    • Market Entry: Evaluating whether a company should enter a new market, considering factors like market size, competition, and profitability.
    • Operations/Cost Optimization: Focused on improving efficiency or reducing costs in a business process.
  2. Round 2 (R2):

    • Growth Strategy: Exploring ways for a company to grow, such as new products, markets, or customer segments.
    • Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A): Assessing the strategic fit and financial viability of a potential acquisition.
    • Industry-Specific Cases: Tailored to the candidate’s background or interests, diving deeper into specific industries or challenges.
    • Creative/Unstructured Cases: These test your ability to think outside the box and handle ambiguity.

Bain Case Interviews

  1. Round 1 (R1):

    • Profitability Analysis: Similar to BCG, this is a staple in Bain’s first-round interviews.
    • Market Sizing: Quick, structured exercises to test your quantitative and logical thinking.
    • Customer Segmentation: Analyzing customer groups to identify opportunities for targeting or growth.
    • Competitive Analysis: Understanding a company’s position relative to competitors and identifying strategic moves.
  2. Round 2 (R2):

    • Private Equity/Investment Cases: Bain often includes cases that simulate evaluating a company for investment, focusing on financials, market potential, and risks.
    • Growth Strategy: Similar to BCG, exploring ways to expand a business.
    • Operational Improvement: Identifying inefficiencies and proposing solutions to improve processes or reduce costs.
    • Industry-Specific Cases: Tailored to the candidate’s experience or the firm’s focus areas.

Key Differences Between Rounds

  • R1: Typically more structured and focused on foundational skills like problem-solving, math, and frameworks.
  • R2: More complex and nuanced, often requiring deeper strategic thinking, creativity, and the ability to handle ambiguity.

While anything can come up, these are the "classics" that tend to appear frequently. Make sure to practice frameworks, mental math, and industry-specific insights to prepare effectively!

Interviewed for both in London. Found BCG R1 and R2 to be close to what you see in the casebooks. Fairly standard business problem, Maths question, chart interpretation etc. Found Bain R1 to be a bit more maths heavy than BCG R1 and R2. The BCG maths was a lot more straightforward with less steps. But found final round BCG much harder and more unstructured than final round Bain.
