Big 4 Intern to MBB
Hey everyone, so I am from a non target Canadian School, McKinsey does do recruiting at my school however. I am looking to get into MBB but I found no topic concerning a Big 4 Intern moving to MBB for Grad positions. I have done a 12 month project management internship with a large energy company and also a 4 month internship with a Big 4 in audit. I have an A CGPA and many leadership positions within the school.
Is it still impossible?

If you have a strong GPA along with your ECs and internships, you might be able to network your way in to an interview (i.e. find alumni on linkedin and try to develop a good reputation with them).
Taking a gamble here, but are you at UofA? If you are you basically need to have outstanding extracurriculars and internships and a very quant major (accounting does not count) for MBB. All 3 of MBB (Bain is probably hardest) hire from UofA btw, just need to network a little bit.

It's not impossible but you're not exactly the typical profile. I would recommend networking as much as possible and possibly attending recruiting events (and leaving a great impression, of course).
What's the typical profile? I found that these guys are pretty random, I have a friend from the same school who just got a McKinsey interview and he is from a Life-Sci background. He did do some lab research positions but other than that; I don't consider him a strong profile.
In my experience, most McK consutlants (if not MBB consultants, that can vary by office, too) come from your typical target (with some semi-target) schools with strong GPAs, decent ECs from which you can develop a compelling story, and interesting internships with at least one recognizable name.
Overall, this can depend on whether one is planning on focusing on a specific industry or one wants to spend some time as a generalist. Likewise, the more previous experience, the more diverse the admits, but even then you are extremely likely to find something close to the above.
Getting a McKinsey interview is a whole different beast than getting the offer... I know plenty of people I would never peg as strong consultants who got interviews (they didn't end up getting offers, so guess I was right).
Big 4 Tech Internship -- Translation into Consulting? (Originally Posted: 03/01/2015)
Right now I'm a student at a semi-target to non-target school for IB/Consulting, but a target school for tech. I'm taking an internship with Apple on one of their engineering teams (for a well-known product). The internship is for the summer and one semester of school, so I'll be deferring my graduation for a semester.
But recently, I've been thinking of transferring into consulting, so my question is how would this internship be looked at by consulting firms (McKinsey/BCG/etc. tier) if I end up interviewing for a summer consulting or fulltime role? I still have two more summers available before I graduate.
