Breaking Into Management Consulting From a Non-Target Undergrad School (with no internship)

Hey WSO Community,

WSO helped me throughout my college career in picking up extremely valuable recruiting / interview specific information and tips that helped launch my career.

My Background: NYC non-target school (think CUNY) finance major with a 3.7 GPA. I held several internships throughout college: M&A / Equity Research at the investment arm of a public Insurance company and Debt Capital Markets analyst at a regional bank.I was finance focused throughout my college career (hence the finance internships) but after my junior summer internship as a debt capital markets analyst I decided to pivot before my senior year and recruit into management consulting. I recruited, networked, and prepped very hard for the interview process and was able to get a entry level consulting analyst job at a big (public) NYC management consulting firm out of college.

I'm hoping I can help out anyone who may be in a similar position or is just looking for information into the recruiting or career lifestyle of a management consultant. Feel free to ask me anything and I look forward to answering any of your questions and helping you out anyway I can!

Thanks so much for doing this! As someone in a similar situation (Non-target with multiple finance internships more interested in doing consulting full time) I'm curious as to what made you decide to transition to consulting as well as if you did anything else to show that consulting was what you wanted to do as opposed to it just being a backup for finance.
