Breaking into Strategy Consulting, Deloitte S&O, OW, Accenture

Hey Monkeys,

So, I've been taking an interest in strategy consulting. Does anyone know how likely it is to lateral into Deloitte S&O, Accenture Strategy, Oliver Wyman, etc. after their first year of post grad work experience?

For reference, I work in IM for GS/MS. I love the responsibility, but I really love examining macro, C Suite problems and presenting my opinions and analysis. Plus, it seems fun. Any opinions on laterals?

Seems very doable. I know a few bankers that have made the switch, and you're not gunning for MBB -- your bar is a bit lower.

Do you know of anyone who would submit your resume? That's pretty helpful, as sometimes getting an interview through web submissions can be tough.

If you don't, I'd start reaching out to people "cold" on linkedin, asking for informational time. Eventually one will get the hint and may offer to submit your resume.

I just lateraled to one of the firms you mentioned, however I worked for a competitor before. In my case they fully recognized my experience and put me on the same level or slightly above of the career level at my old firm (new firm has a different career model, so not 100% comparable). With non-consulting experience it is usually more difficult and if you have only worked for one year, you will have a hard time joining at a higher position than a fresh graduate. A friend of mine joined after 2 full years in IBD at a tier 2 BB and his position was that of someone who had been in the company for 1 year. Normally you will have an advantage though in the first promotion round as you will probably have a head start compared to your non-experienced peers

accounting is the best way to get into running a business. Before the haters jump on a give me loads of examples of people that didn't do it, over half of ftse 100 ceo's have ACA or similar.

Consulting will give you a look a business from the outside, accounting from the inside. However, the Mckinsey's etc. are pretty solid for it too. I can tell you from first hand experience though that accountancy is dull (left it pretty sharpish to do HF trading. No idea about consulting.
