Capital One BA Location

I feel incredibly grateful to have received an offer for Capital One's Business Analyst internship program. The offer is for McLean, however, and I have a strong preference for New York. Does anyone have experience with moving offices and any advice on what I should do? How likely am I to be able to move my internship to NYC?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Capital One's Business Analyst (BA) program has specific office locations tied to different Lines of Business (LOBs). For example, McLean (headquarters) covers a wide range of functions, including Card, while NYC primarily focuses on retail and commercial banking. Moving your internship to NYC might depend on the availability of roles in that office and whether your assigned LOB aligns with NYC's focus.

Here’s some advice:

  1. Communicate Early: Reach out to your recruiter or program coordinator as soon as possible. Express your preference for NYC and inquire about the possibility of transferring your internship location. Be professional and emphasize your enthusiasm for the program.

  2. Understand the LOBs: Research the specific LOBs in NYC and see if they align with your assigned role. If your role is more suited to McLean, it might be challenging to move.

  3. Leverage Networking: If you have connections within Capital One, especially in the NYC office, reach out to them for advice or support. Internal recommendations can sometimes help facilitate such requests.

  4. Be Flexible: If a transfer isn’t possible for the internship, consider excelling in your role at McLean and then expressing your preference for NYC when discussing full-time opportunities.

While moving offices for an internship is not guaranteed, being proactive, professional, and well-informed about the company’s structure will increase your chances.

It happens but extremely unlikely. Basically everyone wants New York but the offices are very small/already overcrowded. The recruiter/program leads will make it sound like there's a chance (likely by saying you will have an "opportunity" to move either when you get a full-time offer or after the first year of the ADP program) but this is literally just for retention do not count on it

Oh... that's not great. Do they prioritize native New Yorkers? I'm from NYC so would like to stay. C1 is great with everyone else except for the location so I'm having a very hard time deciding between it and some other offers. If you have any advice that'd be much appreciated lol.

Having a real "reason" definitely helps but again far from guaranteed haha. The primary LOB there is commercial banking so trying to rotate on to one of those teams can get you there but that's not really where you want to be within C1. The internship/full time program are both great and the Mclean office is super nice but if NYC is a deal breaker I would not count on C1 - definitely ask your recruiter though

Can’t go wrong with either. I’ve really enjoyed my experience at C1, WLB is phenomenal and the pay is great but I am very interested in product/analytics so it makes sense for my goals. If you’re not sure what you want to do or are more interested in general business T2 might win out.
