Choosing between NYC & Dallas

Hi monkeys,

I would appreciate any advice you guys might have in helping me decide on where to start my career.

One offer that I received for full time is for a smaller group in a national accounting firm doing bankruptcy/restructuring work. The environment is very positive and I felt very welcome - the only issue is that I wasn't challenged and I don't know if I will be building the skills I want to build.

The other offer I received was to join a global restructuring/bankruptcy industry leader in their training program that results in a consultant position. The training program is roughly 2 years long. This is my dream company and where I hoped to end up in 5-10 years post-undergrad. The only downside is that I would have to move to Dallas for this opportunity and stay there for the 2-year training program. Another good thing is that I have a mentor who has been incredibly helpful and he would be able to guide me - I don't think not taking this opp would sour the relationship entirely but it would probably not be as positive.

for starting a career (and if you have no extenuating circumstances to stay somewhere geographically), I'd say choose the better job over the better location. Transferring offices is generally easier than companies.

Thank you for your input. Because the role will eventually transition into Turnaround/Restructuring consultant (travel up to 100%) my home office won't really matter so after the training I will be able to switch locations fairly easily.

If the 2nd offer is with Alvarez & Marshall take it; they're absolute stars in that space. Hell, take it anyway. You don't want to be an entry level employee dealing w/ the headaches and costs of NYC when quality of life in Dallas is far, far better.

From a NYC native who relocated to Dallas AND got a kick-ass gig.
