Consulting 2025 Recruiting Landscape

I know 2024 was a shit show, but will this year's recruiting cycle be any better? It seemed certain things were getting better, but now I'm honestly worried since we're only a few months out now. I'm mainly asking about full time recruiting but I'm sure the internship landscape won't be very different.

Also, I know most T2s were only hiring from former intern classes over the last few years, but is that likely to change this year?

The consulting recruiting landscape for 2025 is shaping up to be competitive, but there are some nuances to consider based on trends from previous years:

  1. T2 Firms and Intern-to-FT Conversion: Over the past few years, T2 firms have heavily relied on converting their intern classes into full-time hires. This trend was driven by a combination of cautious hiring practices and a desire to minimize risk. While there’s no explicit indication in the WSO dataset that this will drastically change for 2025, it’s worth noting that firms may adjust their strategies depending on economic conditions and talent needs. If the market stabilizes, there could be a slight increase in external full-time hiring, but it’s best to prepare as if intern-to-FT conversion will remain the primary focus.

  2. MBB and Early Deadlines: MBB firms have been moving their timelines earlier in recent years, with some even introducing July deadlines for full-time applicants. This trend is likely to continue, so being prepared well in advance is crucial. Additionally, MBB firms have emphasized the importance of candidates completing internships before applying, which aligns with their preference for well-rounded, experienced applicants.

  3. Overall Market Conditions: While 2024 was challenging, there’s cautious optimism that 2025 might see some improvement. However, the competitive nature of consulting recruiting means that candidates should expect rigorous processes and limited openings, especially if firms continue to prioritize internal pipelines.

  4. Internship Landscape: As you mentioned, the internship and full-time recruiting landscapes are closely linked. If T2 and MBB firms maintain their focus on intern-to-FT conversion, the internship landscape will remain critical for securing a full-time offer. Networking and excelling during internships will be key differentiators.

Key Takeaways: - Start preparing early, especially for MBB firms with accelerated timelines. - Focus on networking and building relationships within your target firms. - If you’re targeting T2 firms, be aware that intern-to-FT conversion may still dominate their hiring strategy. - Keep an eye on economic and industry trends, as these could influence hiring practices closer to the cycle.
