Contacting an old prof for interview/job advice/contacts

I am planning on applying to a consulting firm's new grad development program and one of my profs used to work for the firm and I got along really well with the prof. Is it safe to email him and tell him I'm applying to the program and ask for tips and/or if he still has contacts in the company that may be able to give me some insight on landing an interview? Is it too much to ask? Please advise monkeysss

Go ahead. I'm on good terms with my advisor and I'm sure he would help me out when it comes to something like this.
