COVID - Internship Impact

There's a likely scenario where COVID doesn't improve enough to allow for in person internships this year. Last Summer (2020), at a some firms, students had a multitude of options, including to not pursue an internship (with guaranteed return offers and full pay). I figured since we went into recruiting knowing there might be a possibility of virtual internships that they might just make everything virtual with no other option if it comes to it. Any thoughts on what internships will be looking like at MBB and Tier 2 firms for the Summer of 2021?

Might depend on the size of the firm. I know that Fauci and other public health officials are fairly confident that public access to the vaccine will be available, at latest, in April. Given that most summer internships start in early June, there's a good 1 to 2 month buffer zone for people to get fully vaccinated. That being said, it's much easier for a small boutique to keep track of their candidates' vaccinations than a BB with massive analyst class sizes.

I'd put MBB in the same boat as a BB– large business analyst class sizes, which would make it logistically more difficult to ensure everyone's vaccinated. By no means impossible, however. A lot of factors are still uncertain (i.e. if the Biden administration can figure out effective distribution, or if the J&J vaccine gets approved, or if enough citizens are willing to get vaccinated) but I'm relatively bullish that internships will be in person– at least for the latter half.
