It depends on what your priorities are at the moment. The way I would go about it is as follows:

  • If you are close to a promotion window and need good reviews above all else, go with P1.
  • If you are not in a promotion window, then use the time to buff up your skillset and go with P2.
    • On a long project with someone who gave you a lower review is not a bad deal, because you can directly show them how much you've improved and take the time with them to fully collect and address feedback (my view on the situation)

What does your day to day look like when you’re on the bench? I’ll be an intern @ MBB and I’m not sure what life looks like when you’re not on an active project.

MBB bench is not bad (but it is a little boring).

At Bain, you wait for your staffing email in the morning. If nothing comes (whether project or client development work) then you are beached for the rest of the day. In that case, do what you want: go to the gym, go shopping, go watch a movie, hang out with friends, go check the sights.

Just make sure you are within 2h of the office in case you are needed urgently. This is unlikely to happen, but better safe than sorry (somehow it's always when you take a chance that something unlikely to happen... happens).

I haven't had a lot of beach time, but it's not bad. Only annoying thing is that you can't really take it as a full day off, and go travel for a day or two spontaneously, cause you might get staffed the next morning.
