Deciding between two summer internships? Help appreciated
Hey everyone,
I have two internship offers and I have trouble deciding which to choose. My ultimate goal is consulting for Big 4, Accenture, etc. I will be recruiting for FT positions this fall so this is my last summer for an internship opportunity. I only recently decided to pursue consulting so I don't have ideal work experience.
Here are the options:
Option 1: Analyst for a boutique strategy consulting firm for the nonprofit sector
Pros- boasts some recognizable clients, does strategy work Cons- only been around for ~5 years, strategy work is in niche industry(nonprofit) that I don't myself pursuing long term, much of the work is remote so I won't be able to replicate the conventional consulting experience, small team ( 15 consultants)
Option 2: Internal technology analyst for a medium sized industry company
Pros- gain consulting exposure to a medium sized company ( 300 employees), learn tech consulting skills, work within a larger group dynamic Cons- less professional environment than boutique firm above, not external consulting

I am an analyst at a MBB and I recommend the boutique strategy consulting firm. When recruiting candidates, we really like seeing a demonstrated interest in the industry as well as relevant experience. Boutique consulting would satisfy that. You could also craft a really good story about how you loved what you did at the boutique firm, but now want exposure to a bigger consulting practice, more opportunities, etc. I will also say that in consulting, a strong GPA and strong campus involvement is probably more important than work experience, so keep that in mind as well (assuming you're undergrad).
Thanks for the insight- that's really helpful. To get to MBB would be my dream but I don't think it would be possible with my GPA/resume at this point without an MBA.
I actually decided against both of these options and opted for a IB summer internship at a regional boutique in NYC. Hopefully, I made the right choice. I was told consultants like people with IB experience but that may only count for BB.
I agree with Commogram. Overall and as long as you're able to spin a convincing story out of it, then it's much easier to go from strategy to non-strategy than the other way around. In this specific case, you seem to get better client exposure at the boutique, too, which is definitely a plus for your next application. Likewise, a small team usually comes with greater potential to take on additional responsibilities.
