Deloitte Advisory Intern Interviewing Process
Hey everyone!
I applied for an Advisory Internship-Business Risk with Deloitte for the upcoming summer. I had the on campus interview with two separate people where it was mainly general questions and going over my resume. They said the next step is a second round office interview. I was wondering what this second round interview is like? For advisory is it a case interview? Or at any point in this process will there be a case interview? Or is this second interview behavioral? Any insight would be very helpful.
Deloitte Advisory is not consulting (that's Deloitte Consulting), and I'm pretty sure there is no case.
The position sounded very much like consulting when I was speaking with the interviewers during the first round, they even asked why I was interested in consulting now, that is why I am very confused. I really would just like to know so I can prepare if it is a case interview. Thanks for your input though!
i was a discovery intern (rotational sophomore program) in advisory- business risk. it's like consulting in the sense that it's client-based work, but the type of work you do is completely different from Deloitte consulting. they are 2 separate legal entities under the Deloitte umbrella.
That sounds kind of similar to what I applied for, I am a junior though and the position was Advisory Intern-Business Risk. So what kind of interview did you have for the second round? All I know is that it is an office visit, and that the first interview round I had was very conversational and resume based.
i interviewed for the soph program so it might be different, but it was all behavioral for the second round. no technicals. it might be different for juniors so can't confirm. i ended up turning down my advisory BR return offer because i wanted to try to get management consulting this year.
Ok great, thanks for the help. Also I realize this is probably very stupid but what are the main differences between advisory and consulting for Deloitte? I go to a non target so I think an advisory internship would still be a great opportunity but I guess it would be nice knowing the difference before I go in for the sec on interview
Not stupid at all - that was a huge question I had while recruiting, and none of the firms really gave a straight answer.
At Deloitte (as well as at several of the other Big 4 firms) advisory generally refers to risk advisory, which boils down to things like IT Audit and contract compliance. A lot of it is more or less similar to assurance, but doesn't necessarily deal with financial statements. IT Audit for example is a lot of performing walkthroughs/testing controls that a company has in place
Deloitte Consulting, on the other hand, is consulting proper: S&O handles strategy work, Digital does tech projects, etc. DC interviews are going to feature your typical case interviews.
I'm assuming you're recruiting with Deloitte AERS? AERS is a bit different from the other Big 4s in that (I think) it covers a bit more than just risk, but overall, it's more compliance and assurance work rather than consulting. Now why is it called 'advisory' rather than plain ol' audit? Who knows. I've heard it's so the firm can bill advisory work at a higher rate by calling it ~advisory~ rather than assurance, and they tend to recruit a different crowd than audit/tax (mostly mgmt. information systems students than accounting students, at my school).
Don't get me wrong, any Big 4 advisory position is going to be a solid job/internship, especially out of undergrad. But be warned that the type of work, prestige (regarding exit opps and grad school) and compensation(!) is pretty different from consulting. Especially at Deloitte, since their consulting arm is fairly prestigious within consulting.
I'd caution you from taking this job just to try to scoot on over to Deloitte Consulting after a year or two, because internal transfers like that are few and far between. If you're truly looking to get into consulting at a non-target, it's either network network network (look for alumni at the firm!) or aim for a smaller consulting firm for the internship and try to leverage that when interviewing for full-time.
That's probably more info than you were looking for, but it's what I wished I knew when recruiting. As to the internship interview itself, AERS was 100% behavioral/conversational. Mine was a 20 minute long interview, kind of odd for a final round interview, but I'd expect maybe 2 rounds and then lunch or something. Good luck!
