Deloitte S&O to PE?
I accepted an offer with Deloitte S&O and am very excited about working there for at least a couple of years. Ultimately however, my dream job would be in PE (and maybe someday VC).
Any advice on how to get there? I know Deloitte doesn't have the PE exit opps of Bain, or the other MBBs, but I have heard it is possible. Is my best bet to just work hard at Deloitte, get a top MBA and go from there, or is there another feasible route to PE? What types of projects should I try to get on in order to learn relevant skills and/or signal interest?
On a related note, is there any work I can be doing in the next few years to prepare myself? Im interested in any ideas, whether it is technical skills that I can/should pick up in my spare time, or even just good reading about the industry.
deloitte wont place to PE. You need to go deloitte -> top mba -> pe
try to get as much financial analysis exposure as possible, go for the CFA and if you want to focus on an industry specific pe fund then try to gain idnustry experence at deloitte by working on client engagements there. Be cognizant of the fact that as a premba analyst your abiity to select your own projects is HIGHLY unlikely and you will get assigned wherever they want to bill you at. Your only way out of this is to kiss ass to a principal/partner who likes you and requests you on his projects, otherwise you'll get stuck doing whatever they tell you to do. Pre mba analysts in consulting are basically peons.
As most people would readily acknowledge, getting into PE post MBA without pre MBA PE experience is extremely difficult but obviously not impossible (especially if you target smaller shops). I agree with most of socola's comments except the recommendation to get a CFA, which is essentially useless outside of investment management. Your time would be better spent studying accounting/modeling, valuation, specific industries, reading, networking, etc. Your goal should be to get into an M7 by crushing the GMAT, getting involved in leadership roles outside of word, demonstrating career trajectory/responsibility at your job and getting good recs/building a network.
going Deloitte to reputable PE shop is almost unheard of, although it may be possible if you have strong connections.
I'd think about Deloitte -> top mba -> I-banking/ MBB Consulting -> PE. Getting good PE shop without I-banking experience or MBB consulting is really hard
