Dilemma for a CPE Student
I am getting my degree in computer engineering (lots of programming and electrical engineering work), My GPA is not very good but I have a good resume with great experience and skills.
I have interviews from companies like Accenture, Deloitte, IBM, and Booz for technology consulting positions. Up until reading this forum I didn't think IT consulting was that bad (whenever you read about it on this forum people only talk down about it). The thing is I want to have a lot of career opportunities and have a decent starting salary. The reason I'm looking into IT consulting is because I want a job with some kind of interpersonal skills required rather than just sitting at a computer all day writing code.
So my dilemma:
Do I go into IT consulting? Is it really that bad? Is it really career limiting, is there any potential? Not only is it IT consulting but its public sector IT consulting. If I do which of these companies would you recommend? Or should I just not go into them if they are only offering IT consulting? I don't know any board members or partners in these companies.
OR...do I go into a more traditional field for CPE majors such as software engineering or embedded systems or systems engineering where I may be stuck with some colleages I probably won't get along with, but I may get a higher initial salary.
Whats my quickest path to 100K?
I know a lot of you will hate seeing this kind of post, but its a legitimate and curious question and I know there have to be a lot of people like me looking for good answers...

Ignore the haters. You're a strong candidate for IT Consulting and you do have the potential to move into different groups within the firms you're interviewing with. Most of the people in this forum don't have any interest in IT Consulting nor do they have the skill set for it. You don't have a typical profile for strategy consulting. I wouldn't suggest you make it a priority.
Compensation will be higher in strategy consulting and you'd get to $100K faster, but that should not be your primary motivating factor.

How good are you at computer science?
A job at a place like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, etc will get you to $100k pretty damn quickly. I have a bit of a tech background, and if I were going to go into tech I'd go to one of these places (or a startup!) over doing tech consulting.
how bad is "not very good" for your GPA?
the quickest way to 100k is banking. and then consulting. i don't think that's the right way to approach your career though.
IT Consulting is not that bad and you can have a good starting salary. However you have to understand that IT for most organizations is Cost Center and not Profit center so there will be a ceiling on how high your salary can go. IT gives u opportunity to develop inter personal skills and as you grow in experience you also gain experience managing people. After few years go the MBA route and choose whatever you want
