EdTech Options

I'm currently in the process of applying to several top-tier MBA programs with the hopes of starting a career in educational technology consulting, more specifically, technology integration/planning and tech strategy for secondary and higher ed.

Although I have no consulting experience, I built educational research databases at a HYP research institute for a while, published several articles there, then took on a massive database automation project at another competitive school. When that project finished, I took a job teaching humanities at a private school. I work with technology, but don't really have your typical IT experience, more like information systems management.

My problem now is that even though I've been promised that there are plenty of jobs in edtech consulting, none of the major firms (MBB, Accenture, Deloitte, etc.) really mention it on their sites. This is frustrating me as I'm trying to put together essays with convincing long and short-term goals (Who I want to work for? What I want to do?). Am I looking in the wrong places? What departments and do these people work for, and what exactly are they doing? Any advice you guys could provide would be helpful.

I don't know if you have enough computing experience to really make an entrepreneur story convincing. An MBA can't make up for a lack of IT experience, and you're really more interested in strategy consulting anyway. A Google search shows there are small firms in place that do strictly educational consulting, but these aren't career goals that are likely to impress adcomms. Unfortunately, I'm not a consultant and can't really help.

I know you can join McK's business technology practice and do only it-related work. No guarantee you'll do only education work though. I don't think there's enough work in that specific space for them to make that guarantee.

OP, I'd also look into Parthenon Group. They're very renowned for their work in education strategy. Arguably better than MBB from what I understand. I don't think they do much technology implementation work though.
