Ex-MBB Consultant - Q&A

Hello all,

I am currently a newer WSO Academy mentor stepping in here and look forward to working with you all in the near future this recruiting season! Here are some facts about me to get to know me better - I believe empathetic leadership is valuable in my mentoring approach:

  • Previous McKinsey BA for 2 years working in the Boston Office
  • Passionate about healthcare, CPG, social impact, people/organizational topics
  • Based here in Miami Beach, FL and enjoy my time walking on the beach for sunrise walks, horseback riding, and cooking
  • Support aspiring MBB consultants with resume workshopping, case interviewing, behaviorals

Within my journey, I have helped individuals from non targets/ semi-targets land their dream consulting roles across the MBB!

Now I am looking forward in supporting you!

Welcome to the WSO community! Your background as a former McKinsey BA and your passion for mentoring aspiring consultants will undoubtedly be a valuable resource for everyone here. Your experience in helping candidates from non-target and semi-target schools break into MBB is especially inspiring and aligns perfectly with the goals of many users on this platform.

If you're open to it, sharing some of your top tips for case interviews, behavioral prep, or resume optimization could be a great way to kick things off. Looking forward to seeing the impact you'll make this recruiting season!

I’ll be starting as a BA in 2027. Do you have any advice on how to be a top bucket performer?

Hey - Congrats on your offer! Happy to share some of my advice:

  • Build strong relationships with your BA class, office leadership, PD, DGL, and CST leadership. It is so so so important. This allows you to be marketable for client engagements
  • Be staffed on client engagements - the more you are staffed the better. Strong relationships with firm leadership will allow you to thrive... even during the slow summer months
  • If you come from a target (Ivy+'s, Little Ivy's, etc.) leverage that to build firm sponsors (you can find this on the firm's internal tool, KNOW)
  • Don't be that person that gets drunk at the firm HH's - people talk

Also happy to schedule a coaching session to talk more about this! Hope this helps :)
