Exit Opps - 2-3 years

All - I'm wondering what are some options after 2-3 years in IT consulting at a large firm (IBM/Accenture/Deloitte)

I recently got promoted and thinking about next steps.

My background is in Accounting/Finance from semi-target (Lehigh/CMU/U of Rochester) and looking to try something different. My initial thoughts are investment banking, boutique strategy consulting, or a strategic position for industry.

Any suggestions? Is an MBA necessary before making this transition?

Thanks

I don't know anything but.......you last question suggests that you haven't done much research. I'm not trying to be negative. This site has lots of information especially answering questions akin to yours. Put in some time and do your homework.

The answer that 80% of this site will give you is that if you network you should be able to get your way to probably the different sides of consulting and maybe IB pre MBA but only if you network hard and you're "high caliber". Otherwise shoot for the MBA if those jobs really interest you, they are very typical post-MBA jobs.

I've seen people exit to other IT consulting groups (especially boutiques), and in some cases to corporate IT groups. I'd say, however, that most of what I've seen has had people landing in the former.

What is the most rare (but still doable path) is to get a variety of experiences in your tech consulting gig, and parlay that into a broader strategic role. It is admittedly a tougher sell, but you can still get the interview. One of my closer friends exited to a product development/internal consulting role at a F50, running some of their mobile application development efforts, which including leading all aspects of his project (financials, marketing, actual product, etc. etc.). He got that role because although he did "IT" consulting, he also had strong exposure to various kinds of strategy projects.
