For MBB: NYU Econ vs UMich Econ

Dear,

I am about to transfer this Spring and I'm making a very tough decision between the two. They are both my dream school with different reasons, but I want to factor in my potential chances to MBB as well while making the decision. I heard NYU is not a target for MBB, and I wanna know if that's the case for UMich ECON (non-Ross). Also my potential chances for IB or buy-side after graduattion (NYU Econ vs UMich Econ).

Thanks!!

Second for UMich presence in the Midwest - I would go with that if you do not have a strong preference for Northeast positions.

They don’t need it to be a target. Almost as important as school ranking is location. For the northeast offices, MBB targets are basically ivies + MIT. They don’t need to recruit from NYU because they have more than enough people from those schools that want to work in Boston/New York. UMich and UT Austin are targets for Chicago and Texas offices respectively due to location, even though you could argue NYU is on par with/better than them

I know a lot of people from NYU that had success getting in MBB and other consulting firms. It is true MBB is less active at NYU than you'd expect given where NYU Stern falls on business school rankings.

It's not really about the quality of students. The thing is NYU (Dartmouth and UPenn to lesser degree) are investment banker factories and a lot of the top students have opted to go to GS and other boutique banks after getting offers at MBB. MBB are still actively recruiting at places like Georgetown because they are much less likely to be burned by investment banks than at NYU. UPenn and Dartmouth students are worth the risk so they recruit anyway despite the risk of getting burned.

This is more hopeful input! At least NYU is not "excluded" from MBB. I'm worried if that's only the case with Stern tho. That's the hurdle I have to overcome anyways as an Econ major.
