From Professional MBA to Consulting- Is it possible?

I am extremely interested in consulting (particularly strategy) and wanted to ask a couple of questions.

1.) Is it possible to have a professional MBA (MBA while working) from a top school and get into consulting that way? Will I receive the same treatment as a FT MBA?
2.) I work in the energy sector for a company that is a client of some of the big consulting companies. Can I leverage this experience plus my MBA background to get into consulting?
3.) How bad is the traveling? Are there period where you can work at home (as I have seen common)?

Thanks!

  1. Yes, possible to get into consulting that way. No, not same treatment as FT MBA. Some schools don't allow you to attend OCR events, others will bar you from applying to certain employers. But an MBA will never hurt (and hopefully since you're working while getting one, the debt won't be too much of a concern).

  2. Yes, assuming you've made some good connections from this?

  3. Depends on your firm. When you're on an engagement at the client site, expect to fly out Monday morning and fly back Thursday evening. During your bench time, when you're not actively on an engagement, you'll be working from the regional office you're tied to (doing things like pitching, due diligence, etc.) Rarely have I seen people work from home, but that could just be my experience.

Thanks for the reply chicandtoughness! Also, how is training work when you join? Do they go over a rigorous set of training modules and you're expected to apply them on your projects? Do you usually have a mentor during a client's onsite visit?
