Healthcare Management Consulting
I'm going into a top MHA program in the fall and I would like to know about the demand for healthcare consultants among the big 4 and other firms. Which firms have growing healthcare practices? Also, how much should a first year consultant expect to earn at one of these firms? Are there good exit opportunities within healthcare advisory?
Ah, MHA, the good ole "providing quality care at a higher cost" mindset ;).
Among the Big 4, Deloitte and EY have the best growing healthcare practices that I'm aware of, I'm not sure about the demand for entry-level consultants, but I know they're hiring at the managerial level.
Not sure how much you'll learn in one year. In terms of a steeper learning curve, you'd be better off (for someone with an MHA) at firms like Huron, ECG, Navigant, etc...
Exit Opps that I've been aware of in my network: Partner (PwC) -> Operating partner at healthcare software company Manager (Deloitte) -> Manager at a smaller, hospital consulting firm Manager (PwC or KPMG I forget..) -> Head of business development at a cancer research hospital
All the big 4 have growing healthcare advisory areas - particularly for hospitals.
Salaries out of an MHA program are typically in the $75K to $120K range, depending on whether you are being hired into an analyst role (post-undergrad) or a consultant role (post-MBA). You can be placed in either bucket depending on the firm's recruitment targets that cycle.
Not sure about other firms in terms of exit opps, but Deloitte's exit opps are fairly broad - while quite a few alumni join hospitals as managers and directors, many others exit to life sciences, pharma, biotech and health startup companies. It really depends on the connections you have and how you leverage your skills/experience.

You can choose best consulting firm for making a good career in this field. You can take an advice of the consultants about best firms.

I have a phone interview scheduled with a director from a boutique healthcare firm and wanted to know if this is considered a pigeonhole industry to gain experience in consulting? Would I be able to join a larger, more reputable consulting firm in a few years, or would I only be marketable to healthcare consulting positions?
I have nothing against healthcare, I just don't want to specialize in any one industry. Not yet at least.
