WSO peeps,
I need help. I'm stuck in a Big 4 Advisory practice that I don't want to be in (Risk Advisory) and am desperately trying to GTFO. I've been here for almost 2 years. I was not recruited for, nor hired for risk work but that is where I was pigeonholed. The problem is that I only have experience in the field that I don't want to work in. What kind of roles should I be looking for? I would prefer to be a general business analyst in a Fortune 500 but I'm thinking that that may be tricky considering I only have experience in Risk Management. I also wouldn't mind going to another consulting firm but I refuse to work in risk. I can Excel/PPT as if my life depended on it but I have no clue if thats a differentiator these days.
I'm sure others have had similar experiences, how do I get the hell out of here. If I stay, I will be miserable for my whole career.
Multiple options
1) try and get an advanced degree - 2 years is on the lower side for a good B-School to get your MBA. But you can try other Master's programs in the field you want to transition to 2) Try moving to an entry level role in the industry you want to work in. Since you have only 2 years of experience, it wont hurt to start fresh. That said, it wont be easy to convince the new employer to take you at an entry level but most hiring managers will understand if you tell them that you do not enjoy the current field you are in.
Now is the time to get out as it will become much tougher once you have a couple of more years of experience.
Thanks for the advice. I'm on the fence about getting a MBA/grad degree because I'm already paying a ton in student debt from undergrad. I may consider looking for an entry level role somewhere else, but am hesitant because it would likely mean a pay cut.
I think the best bet might be to somehow get yourself into another group within your current company, and then leverage that to get out of there.
