Help with Booz cover letter and general queries. Please read!
Hi guys,
I need some help with my cover letter for Booz for a summer internship as I'm not quite sure how to portray the PwC merger. My main concerns are:
1) 'Typical' cover letter stuff such as talking about Booz's culture, publications/magazine etc go out the window with the PwC merger (right?)
2) Talking about a consulting firm in a cover letter is harder than to do so for a bank- there are no figures to mention and most do not even have their business principles/philosophy outlined explicitly on their website. What are typical strategies/tips to counter/work around this?
Below is my draft of the first/relevant paragraph about Booz. Kindly critique and offer suggestions (even if not related to Booz). Thanks! :)
I am excited to have an opportunity to work at Booz & Company as a Summer Consultant. The culture at Booz & Company provides for a unique learning experience in an inclusive, collegiate environment. The firm has an extensive knowledge-base of insights which it disseminates through its publications- such as its strategy+business newsletters and various articles. I believe this echoes the Firm’s core values such as ‘Thinking ahead’ and being ‘Bold and unafraid’ when engaging with both current as well as potential clientele. The firm has also emerged as the frontrunner to a trend of consolidation in the consulting industry. The merger with PwC represents two exciting opportunities for a potential employee such as myself- an increased exposure to clients across operational and strategy consulting, and, a dynamic and collegiate culture within the large and extensively global PwC advisory arm.
You're thinking too hard about this. It's likely not even going to be read. Think more general and you don't need to dig too deep on the acquisition.
You're pitching to a Booz guy who may or may not think the PwC merger sucks. On top of that, the whole topic is a downer for them because of the stress of the change, decision to stay or go, and the fact that it represents the end of a once great name. Now, I'm not trashing the merger, it had to happen--but don't talk about it. Your letter needs to be all rainbows and unicorns.
Yes I was wondering whether the recruitment manager would be for or against it and how I should broach (or not) the the issue. Thanks guys!
So I should not mention it at all- that wouldn't constitute as me 'not knowing about Booz's latest happenings'?
They know you know. During the fit interview, if you feel they are probing how well you know the firm, you could allude to your confidence in the strength of the Booz culture and team outlasting any superficial changes over the next couple years. Other than that, I'd just be casual about it and express excitement and interest in the team, the work, etc...
