How does office ranking work?

Hey everyone. I'm going to be applying for a summer internship at an MBB and we're given three choices to rank our office preferences. Does anyone know how this works? Do they send your application to the three offices or only to the first? I speak Japanese and have work experience related to Japan, which I think would be most appreciated at the Japanese office. However, I would much rather prefer to work in the States, so if I put Japan as my third choice, while putting (probably more competitive) US offices as my first two, how would this work in terms of my application/interviews, etc? Many thanks.

From my experience getting interviews at M/B/B

they usually consider your number 1 preference

But US recruiting is separate from Japanese recruiting

That being said if your credentials are not strong enough it is extremely hard to get an US interview, you would have an edge in Japan

I'm not sure if you actually get chosen for your 1st choice, but previously I have applied to Asian offices and US, and I usually get interviewed for my 1st choice which were the Asian offices
