How often do MBB hire laterals?

Joined a T2/Boutique life sciences focused group from pharma, looking to lateral to MBB in LS PE space in the next year. Would love to hear thoughts on MBB's behavior at the post-MBA level as an experienced hire (no MBA).

MBB firms do hire laterals, but the frequency and conditions depend on several factors. Based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Lateral Hiring Practices:

    • Lateral hires from other consulting firms typically preserve most of their seniority.
    • Lateral hires from other industries (like pharma in your case) usually come in at the corresponding entry-level, depending on whether they are pre-MBA or post-MBA. For example, someone with 2 years of experience post-undergrad would enter at the undergrad hire level, while someone with 2 years post-MBA experience would enter at the MBA hire level.
  2. Post-MBA Level Without an MBA:

    • Without an MBA, it can be challenging to enter directly at the post-MBA level unless you have significant, relevant experience. In some cases, an "accelerated track" can be negotiated, but this is not guaranteed.
    • Exceptions occur when lateral hires are senior and established enough to be hired into a specific practice. In such cases, they might temporarily start at the post-MBA level for a learning period (e.g., 6 months) before assuming their proper seniority.
  3. Specialization in Life Sciences PE:

    • Targeting a specific practice like Life Sciences PE could work in your favor, as MBB often values deep industry expertise for specialized roles. Networking with MBA classmates or colleagues already in MBB's Life Sciences practice could help you connect with recruiting managers.
  4. Networking and Strategy:

    • Networking is critical. Reach out to individuals in the Life Sciences practice at MBB, and ask for introductions to recruiting managers. This can help you better position yourself as an experienced hire.

While lateraling to MBB without an MBA is possible, it requires a strong case for your expertise and a strategic approach to networking.
