How to come back on track?!

Hey everyone,

hope you are all doing fine :-)

My situation is the following:

  • I am from and living in a non-US country, 26 years old

  • Undergrad: Management at non-target with perfect GPA

  • Masters: Management at target with perfect GPA

  • During my undergrad I did a lot of work at a large, global corporate since they also supported my tuition fees but I never really found the work inspiring or challenging enough

  • After my Masters I made it to MBB

The last couple years I was always extremely extrinsicly motivated and always wanted to be better than others. My whole self-worth came from being "the best". That came to a very toxic level so that the pressure at MBB was a lot for me. Moreover, I had some serious relationship problems and became very depressed. I started doubting my whole career choice and had the feeling that I wanted a "normal life" with a better WLB. The fact that I was at a very toxic project with a project lead with whom I never vibed added to that. That led to the fact that I showed only medium performance and was put in a lower bucket. This added to my anxiety and I quit after a year and went back to my old corporate. It was more like finding a fast plan B instead of really thinking about what I really want.

In the last couple months at MBB, I started therapy and worked heavily on my mental health and self-perception. That also brought my back to my original purpose of wanting to work in a fast-paced environment, with inspiring projects and bright colleagues. I started to find myself again and performed very well. However, I had already quit so it was too late. My last MDs were very satisfied with my performance and wanted to keep my at the firm and told my I should call them if I wanted to return at one point. I had also a lot of fun and liked coming to work everyday.

I started a couple weeks ago at the corporate and it is hell for me. It is not challenging at all, not strategic at all and I do very easy tasks that anyone could learn. Also I am not exposed to management and I am not even interested in the product (it was just an escape from my mental health problems when I quit and the security to get a regular salary).

Now my question really is how I should proceed.

  • I really want to return to MBB but I don't know how long I should wait to contact them again and quit here.

  • Should / can I openly explain my MDs who were supporting me what really happened and why I left and that I sorted this out.

  • How should I spend my free-time and time at this job to best prepare for a return to MBB?

Additional infos:

  • My contract says that in the first six months I can quit with a 1 week notice. After that it becomes 6 months.

  • I have no strong intention to return to the industry - however I find it interesting from a strategic point of view but the operations is extremely boring.

I would be extremely grateful for honest and supporting thoughts. Thanks a lot guys :-D

Definitely a tough spot that you've been in, but it's good that before leaving you managed to turn it around (always a good signal for your old MBB and for yourself).

If your previous teams at MBB (inc. partners / HR / staffing) said you could always come back, then you're probably fine contacting them again. I would say the sooner the better.

As for your current employer, I am sure you can explain to them directly (once you've secured a return offer to your old MBB) that whilst you're interested in the industry / sector and have enjoyed your colleagues, you are at a stage in your career where you need to find the type of challenges that MBB offers.

It's always possible to return to that industry in a few years (or another one down the line if you change your mind).

In summary, if you can (a) secure that return offer and (b) ensure the exit from your current employer is done on good terms (which I think you did the first time), you should be good.

Best of luck to you!
